Fit a bathroom wall cabinet to a timber stud wall

Fit a bathroom wall cabinet safely and level, with the right fixing for whatever is behind your plasterboard or masonry.

WC-01Plan the job and gather your kitChoose a position away from direct water spray, ideally not directly above a basin tap where splashes will hit it constantly. Unpack the cabinet and check what fixings are included — many come with generic plugs that are wrong for stud walls, so treat them as spares only. Lay out a dust sheet below your work area to catch drilling debris.

WC-02Find your stopcock and scan the wall before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a bathroom wall, not just in the usual safe zones. Run a detector over the whole area, then still treat the wall as if something is there — detectors miss deep cables, metal conduit, and anything behind metal-backed board. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about what's behind the wall, isolate the electrics at the consumer unit before drilling.

WC-03Work out what your wall is made ofTap along the wall: solid, dull thuds all over mean brick or block; a hollow sound between firmer points means a stud wall or dot-and-dab. Drill a small pilot hole at a fixing point — timber dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means a metal stud, and soft chalky dust that suddenly hits thin timber every 300-400mm means lath and plaster. On a hollow wall, keep drilling gently — if you hit solid masonry after roughly 40-60mm of air gap, it's dot-and-dab plasterboard over brick or block.

WC-04Mark the fixing positions and check the line is levelHold the cabinet (or its template) against the wall at a comfortable height and mark the top fixing points with a pencil. Use the spirit level to draw a true horizontal line through these marks before drilling anything — plasterboard and old plaster walls are rarely straight, so don't trust the ceiling or floor line. Double-check the marks line up with any stud positions you found in the previous step.
WC-05Solid brick or block: drill and plugDrill with a hammer action using a 6mm masonry bit to a depth of 40-45mm. Blow or vacuum the dust out of the hole, then push in a plastic wall plug until it sits flush. Drive a 40mm screw into the plug to fix the cabinet's backplate or bracket, checking the plug doesn't spin freely — if it does, the hole is too big and you need a bigger plug.

WC-06Timber stud wall: screw straight into the studWhere a fixing point lands on the centre of a stud, drill a 3mm pilot hole and drive a 4x40mm wood screw straight in — no plug needed. Where a fixing point falls between studs, on plasterboard alone, use a metal spring toggle or hollow-wall anchor rated for the cabinet's loaded weight, not a plain wood screw. Aim to land at least two of the four fixing points on solid stud timber for a cabinet this size.

WC-07Metal stud wall: use the right metal-frame fixingNever use a plastic plug or ordinary wood screw in a metal stud — it strips straight through 0.5mm steel and won't hold. Where a point lines up with the metal stud itself, use a self-drilling metal-stud screw, which cuts its own thread into the steel. Where a point falls on plasterboard only, use a snap or spring toggle rated for the loaded weight. A metal stud alone won't safely carry a cabinet full of glass bottles long-term — if you can, land at least two fixing points on the studs themselves, and consider a timber noggin fitted behind the board if the cabinet will be heavily loaded.

WC-08Dot-and-dab plasterboard: fix through to the masonryDot-and-dab board sits on a 40-60mm air gap over solid brick or block, so a plasterboard-only fixing isn't enough for anything holding water or weight. Drill through the board and the void with a long masonry bit, then use a frame fixing (around 75mm long) or a resin anchor that passes through the void and grips the masonry behind, not just the board. Check the fixing is long enough by measuring the void depth from your earlier pilot hole test.

WC-09Lath and plaster: fix into timber, not old plasterOld lime plaster is soft and cracks easily, so drill slowly with no hammer action and support the plaster with your free hand as you go. Use the pilot-hole dust test to find the timber studs or noggins sitting behind the laths, and fix into solid timber wherever possible with a screw long enough to bite at least 30mm into it. If no timber lines up with your fixing points, use a specialist plaster/lath toggle rather than relying on the old plaster to hold weight.

WC-10Lift the cabinet onto its fixingsWith a helper if the cabinet is large, lift it onto the wall screws or bracket, engaging any keyhole slots on the backplate before letting go. Check it's sitting flush against the wall with no gaps at the top edge, which would suggest a fixing hasn't gripped properly.
WC-11Check it's level and secure, then hang the doorsRun the spirit level across the top and side of the cabinet and adjust the fixings slightly if it's out. Give the cabinet a firm push and pull test by hand — it should not move or creak away from the wall. Rehang any shelves or mirror doors that were removed for fitting, and check they open and close freely.
WC-12Clean up and finish offVacuum drilling dust from the floor, sill and inside the cabinet before it settles into fittings. Wipe down the wall around the cabinet with a damp cloth. If the cabinet sits close to a tiled splashback or shower screen, run a thin bead of silicone sealant along the top edge to stop water tracking behind it.
