Fit a glass bathroom shelf to a timber stud wall

Mark, check and fix a glass shelf safely to any bathroom wall type, with the right fixing for what's actually behind the tiles.

GS-01Plan the height and mark the fixing pointsHold the shelf bracket kit against the wall at a comfortable height, usually 1200-1400mm from the floor above a basin. Use a spirit level to draw a level pencil line, then mark the two fixing holes through the bracket itself. Use masking tape over tiles to stop the drill bit skating.

GS-02Work out what's behind your tilesTap along the marked area. A dull, solid knock everywhere means solid brick or block. A hollow sound that comes and goes as you move sideways usually means a timber or metal stud wall, or dot-and-dab plasterboard on masonry. Run a magnet or stud detector over the area - a line of clicks or magnet pulls marks a stud or the screw heads holding plasterboard to it.
GS-03Check for timber or metal studs, and confirm with a pilot holeIf you've found a hollow line, work out whether it's timber or metal before you commit. Drill a 3mm pilot hole at one mark: pale wood dust means a timber stud, fine bright metal swarf means a steel stud, and no resistance with a soft crumbly dust means you've gone straight into plasterboard between studs. In pre-1930s houses, a springy give under light pressure often means lath and plaster instead.

GS-04Check for cables and pipes, and know your isolation pointsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a bathroom, not just in the usual safe zones, and a cheap detector can miss cables in metal conduit, behind metal-backed board, or run through a metal stud frame. Use your detector, but still drill slowly and stop the moment you feel a change in resistance or see anything other than dust. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
GS-05Drill and fit the right fixing for your wall typeTimber stud: drill a 3mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud and drive a 40mm wood screw directly in - no plug needed. Metal stud: never use a wood screw or plastic plug, both strip straight through 0.5mm steel; drill the size stated on the pack and fit a self-drilling metal-stud anchor or toggle fixing instead. Plasterboard between studs (no stud behind the hole): use a nylon or spring toggle rated for at least 5kg, since a small glass shelf loads the wall harder than its weight suggests once you lean on it. Dot-and-dab plasterboard: the fixing needs to reach through the adhesive void into the masonry behind, so use a 60-75mm frame fixing, not a short plasterboard plug. Solid brick or block: drill a 6mm hole to 50mm depth with a masonry bit, insert a plug, and drive a 40mm screw home. Lath and plaster: ordinary plugs can crack the lath behind, so use a long screw into a timber batten if one is present, or a lath-rated toggle fixing.

GS-06Fix the brackets and check they're levelScrew both brackets into place through the fixings you've just fitted, tightening evenly so neither side pulls the fixing at an angle. Rest the spirit level across both brackets and adjust before you fully tighten if either side sits low.
GS-07Fit the glass shelf and load-test itLower the glass shelf into the bracket channels, following the kit's instructions - most just slide in and rest on a rubber lip. Push down gently on both ends to check the fixing holds without any movement or creaking before you trust it with bottles.
GS-08Seal any drilled tiles and clear upIf the fixing sits near a tiled shower area, run a thin bead of sanitary silicone around the bracket base to stop water tracking behind it. Wipe down dust with a damp cloth and vacuum any drilled debris from the floor before it gets trodden into grout lines.
