Fit a battery heat alarm to a lath and plaster ceiling

Find the joist behind a lath and plaster ceiling and fit a battery heat alarm safely and securely.

HA-01Gather your tools and clear the areaLay a dust sheet under the work area and move anything you can't afford to get plaster dust on. You'll need a stepladder, a pencil, a tape measure, a stud/cable detector, a drill with a small pilot bit, a screwdriver, and the heat alarm with its screws and battery. Set your steps on a firm, level surface and don't overreach.

HA-02Confirm you actually have lath and plasterTap the ceiling gently between suspected joists. True lath and plaster sounds hollow with faint ridges every 300-400mm where the laths sit, and a tiny test hole brings out fine white plaster dust with occasional splinters, not the grey powder of plasterboard skim. If your test hole brings out clean grey plasterboard, the ceiling has been replaced and you should treat it as plasterboard on timber joists instead — the fixing method in this guide still works, but the ceiling is stronger and more forgiving.
HA-03Find the joistRun your detector across the ceiling to pick up the line of nail or screw heads that mark a joist, or knock along the ceiling and listen for the change from hollow to solid. Joists usually run at 400mm or 450mm centres. Mark the centre of the joist nearest your chosen spot with a pencil line, and mark it in two places so you can draw a straight line along it.
HA-04Choose the fixing pointHeat alarms belong in the kitchen, fitted to the ceiling and not the wall, ideally 300mm to 600mm from any wall and away from the cooker hood or extractor draught. Pick a point that lands on your marked joist line so the fixing is solid. HA-05Check for cables and pipes before you drillSweep the area with your detector, but don't trust it completely — old cloth-insulated wiring, cables in the loft void, and any pipework feeding a bathroom above can all be missed, especially through old plaster and lath. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
HA-06Drill the pilot holesHold the alarm baseplate against your marked joist and mark the screw holes through it. Drill a 2mm pilot hole at each mark, going gently — lath and plaster is brittle and can crack or crumble if you push too hard. Stop drilling the moment you feel the bit break through the lath into the joist behind; you don't need to go any deeper.

HA-07Fix the baseplate into the joistScrew the baseplate to the ceiling using the screws supplied, driving into the timber joist rather than just the lath and plaster. A joist will happily hold the light weight of a heat alarm with an ordinary wood screw — you don't need a wall plug or toggle fixing here. Check the plate sits flat and doesn't rock.

HA-08If you can't land on a joistIf your only sensible position falls between joists, don't rely on lath and plaster alone — it will eventually crumble under the fixing. Use a light-duty spring toggle or lath-and-plaster fixing rated for the alarm's weight, following the pack instructions for hole size. Where possible, shift the alarm a few centimetres to land on the joist instead, since this is always the stronger fix.

HA-09Fit the battery and clip on the alarmInsert the battery into the alarm body, following the polarity markings inside the case. Twist or clip the alarm head onto the baseplate until it locks — most heat alarms turn clockwise to lock in place, like a smoke alarm.

HA-10Test the alarmPress the test button and hold it until you hear the alarm sound clearly. If nothing happens, check the battery is seated correctly and the alarm head is fully locked onto the baseplate, then test again.
HA-11Tidy up and record the test dateVacuum up plaster dust from the floor and dust sheet, and wipe down surfaces nearby. Write the test date somewhere handy, such as a phone reminder, and test the alarm monthly from now on — heat alarm batteries typically last a year or more but the sensor itself should be replaced roughly every 10 years.
