Fit a battery smoke alarm to a lath and plaster ceiling by screwing the bracket into a joist, never the laths or plaster.

AB-01Choose where the alarm goesAim for the centre of the room or landing, or as close to it as the joists allow. Building Regulations Approved Document B gives guidance for smoke alarm positioning: within 300mm of the ceiling, at least 300mm from walls and light fittings. This is guidance, not a legal requirement for adding one battery alarm to an existing home, and Part P doesn't apply here because a battery alarm has no fixed wiring.

Approved Document B sets out recommended smoke alarm positions and numbers for new work. Fitting a single battery alarm in an existing home isn't legally compulsory, but following the guidance is good practice. Part P doesn't apply because there's no mains wiring involved.

AB-02Set up and gather your toolsPut your stepladder on firm, level ground directly under the fixing point, following your usual safe ladder set-up. Lay a dust sheet below to catch old plaster debris. Have your drill, pilot bit, screwdriver, torch, detector and a pencil to hand before you climb up.

AB-03Find the joist and check what's above the ceilingOn lath and plaster, the thin laths and old lime plaster won't hold any weight, so you must screw into a joist, never just the plaster. Tap along the ceiling: a dull thud means solid joist, a hollow sound means gap between laths. A stud/joist detector or a magnet dragged along tends to pick up the nail lines fixing the laths, which run along each joist roughly every 400-450mm. A small pilot hole helps confirm: fine, dry plaster and wood dust means you've found timber; nothing but crumbly plaster means you're between joists and need to move a little.
AB-04Know your ceiling type before you commitThis job assumes lath and plaster on timber joists, which is the most common older ceiling. If your pilot hole brings out fine grey swarf and the ceiling feels cold and metallic when tapped, you may have plasterboard on metal furring channels instead — common in refurbished flats — and you'll need a metal-stud fixing, not a wood screw. If the ceiling is smooth modern plasterboard with regular screw dimples in a grid, it's plasterboard on timber joists and the same wood screw method below applies. A solid concrete ceiling, sometimes found in flats and basements, feels solid everywhere with no hollow sound and needs a masonry plug rather than a wood screw. Dot-and-dab is a wall lining technique and doesn't apply to ceilings, so you won't meet it here.
AB-05Check for cables and pipes, then drill safelyCables can run almost anywhere in a ceiling void, especially near light fittings, and cheap detectors can miss deep cables or anything behind old lath and plaster. Run your detector over the spot, but still treat the area as if a cable is there until you've drilled a small trial pilot hole and confirmed it's clear. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you ever hit a pipe. If your chosen spot is close to a light fitting or you have any doubt at all, isolate the lighting circuit at the consumer unit first.

AB-06Drill the fixing holes for your ceiling typeFor lath and plaster or plasterboard on timber joists, drill a 3mm pilot hole about 30mm deep into the centre of the joist for each screw, to stop the old plaster cracking as the screw bites. For plasterboard on metal furring channels, don't use a wood screw as it will strip straight through the thin steel; use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing instead. For a solid concrete ceiling, drill with a masonry bit sized to match your wall plug (typically 6mm for a standard plug) to a depth of about 35-40mm, then insert the plug fully.

AB-07Screw the mounting bracket to the ceilingHold the bracket against the ceiling and screw it into your prepared holes using the correct fixing for your ceiling type. Use 35-40mm wood screws for a timber joist, driven straight and snug — not overtightened, as this can crack old lath and plaster. Check the bracket sits flat and doesn't rock before moving on.

AB-08Fit the battery and clip on the alarmInsert the battery if it isn't a sealed 10-year unit, following the arrows in the battery compartment. Twist the alarm body onto the bracket until it clicks and locks in place, so it can't be knocked loose from below.

AB-09Test it and tidy upPress the test button and check for a loud, clear beep. Vacuum up any plaster dust from the ladder area and floor, fold away your dust sheet, and wipe down the ladder feet if they've picked up dust. Set a phone reminder to test the alarm monthly and note the battery type for future replacement.
