Fit a ceiling support for an L-shaped shower rail to a lath and plaster ceiling

Fit a ceiling support for an L-shaped shower rail into a lath and plaster ceiling, with safe wall fixings at both ends.

SR-01Gather your tools and materialsLay everything out before you climb the ladder. Check the shower rail kit has both wall brackets, the ceiling support pole or strap, and all fixing screws. You'll also need a detector, spirit level, cordless drill, a selection of drill bits, a pencil and tape measure.

SR-02Mark out the positionHold the rail kit against the corner and mark where each wall bracket and the ceiling support point will go. Use a spirit level to make sure the horizontal marks line up on both walls, usually around 2000mm from the floor, or follow the manufacturer's height guide. The ceiling support point should sit directly above the corner join.

SR-03Find the joist above the lath and plasterLath and plaster alone won't hold a shower rail — you need a ceiling joist behind it. Tap along the ceiling near your mark; a dull, solid sound usually means a joist, a hollow sound means you're between them. A detector can struggle here because old plaster is thick and uneven, and some lath ceilings have metal lathing that confuses cheap detectors, so don't rely on it alone.
SR-04Confirm the joist with a test holeDrill a small 3mm pilot hole at your marked point. Fine timber dust means you've hit the joist. If you get nothing but crumbly plaster and a hole that feels hollow, move sideways in small steps — joists are usually spaced 400mm or 600mm apart — and try again until you find solid timber.

SR-05Check for cables and pipes, and know your isolation pointsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a ceiling void, especially near a bathroom light or extractor fan. Run your detector over the area first, but still treat the ceiling as if something could be there. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely, so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.

Bathrooms are a special location under Part P of the Building Regulations. If you disturb, move or alter any wiring, that counts as notifiable electrical work — get a registered electrician to deal with it, don't make it good yourself.

SR-06Fix the ceiling support bracket into the joistDrill a pilot hole into the joist you've located, then drive a 50mm wood screw through the ceiling support bracket and plaster into the timber. Don't rely on screws into the laths alone, they will pull straight through. If the joist doesn't line up with your ideal position, you'll need to fit a timber noggin across two joists first, or reposition the bracket slightly to land on solid timber.

SR-07Work out your wall type before fixing the end bracketsCheck both walls where the brackets will go. Tap the wall — solid brick or block sounds dull and dense, plasterboard on a frame sounds hollow. Run a detector or magnet along the wall to find a line of screw heads showing stud spacing. A test pilot hole tells you the rest: fine timber dust means a wood stud, grey powder with no give means solid masonry, and shiny metal shavings mean a metal stud.
SR-08Fit the wall bracket — solid brick or blockDrill with a 6mm masonry bit to a depth of at least 45mm, insert a 50mm wall plug, and drive in the bracket screw. Make sure the plug sits flush and doesn't spin in the hole before you fix the bracket.

SR-09Fit the wall bracket — plasterboard on timber or metal studsOn a timber stud, drill a pilot hole into the centre of the stud and use a 40mm wood screw straight into the timber. On a metal stud, never use a wood screw or plastic plug, they strip straight through the thin steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the bracket's pull weight instead.

SR-10Fit the wall bracket — dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab boards have an air gap behind them, so a short screw only grips plaster adhesive, not much strength. Use a fixing long enough to pass through the plasterboard and adhesive dabs and bite into the solid masonry behind, typically 60-75mm. If you can't reach masonry, use a heavy-duty hollow-wall toggle fixing rated for the load instead.

SR-11Assemble the rail and ceiling supportSlot the two rail sections together to form the L-shape and offer it up to the wall brackets. Attach the ceiling support pole or strap between the rail's corner joint and the ceiling bracket, then fit the end caps.
SR-12Check level and tighten everythingRun the spirit level along both sections of the rail and adjust the brackets slightly if needed. Go round every screw and fixing, including the ceiling support, and tighten fully. Give the rail a firm push and pull test in both directions before trusting it with weight.
SR-13Seal and finishRun a thin bead of silicone sealant around the base of each wall bracket to stop water getting behind it. Fill any unused pilot holes with a dab of filler once dry, and touch in paint if needed.

SR-14Test and tidy upHang the shower curtain or panel and check the rail holds firm under normal use. Vacuum up any dust and plaster debris from the floor and bath, and dispose of packaging.
