Fit a fold-down breakfast bar to a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Fit a fold-down breakfast bar to a dot-and-dab wall by fixing through to the masonry behind, not just into the plasterboard.

FB-01Plan the position and check the loadDecide the height (900mm from the floor is standard for a breakfast bar) and mark the centre line with a pencil. Check the bracket kit's weight rating covers the worktop plus people leaning on it when down, not just the worktop alone. Fold-down brackets put a strong pulling-away force on the wall, so this is not a light fixing job.

FB-02Find your stopcock and check for cables and pipes before drillingFind your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely before you start. Run a cable and pipe detector over the whole marked area, but don't trust it completely — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed plasterboard. Kitchens are full of both cables and pipes, so treat every hole as if something might be there and drill carefully and slowly. If in doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit and turn off the water at the stopcock before you drill.

FB-03Confirm what's actually behind the plasterboardTap the wall along your marked line. A hollow, slightly bouncy sound with a dull thud every so often usually means dot-and-dab, where blobs of adhesive stick the plasterboard to solid masonry behind, with gaps between. Drill a small 3mm test hole and feel for a void, then solid resistance — that confirms dot-and-dab, and the void is usually 10mm to 40mm deep. If instead you find timber under the board (a magnet finds nothing but you hit resistance every 400mm to 600mm, and the pilot hole brings out wood dust), you have a timber stud wall. If a magnet or detector picks up thin vertical strips of metal and a pilot hole brings out fine steel swarf, you have a metal stud wall. If the wall feels solid everywhere with no void, it's solid brick or block with no dot-and-dab. In an older kitchen, if you break through thin plaster onto narrow wooden strips, that's lath and plaster.

FB-04Choose the right fixing for your wall typeFor dot-and-dab, use long masonry sleeve anchors or resin anchors that pass through the plasterboard, bridge the void, and grip solidly in the masonry behind — never rely on plasterboard toggles alone for this job, the pulling force will pull them straight out over time. For solid brick or block with no dab, use standard heavy-duty wall plugs and screws sized for the masonry, no sleeve needed. For a timber stud wall, you need a solid timber noggin fitted between two studs behind the bracket position, then fix with coach screws into the noggin — plasterboard alone will not hold this fixing. For a metal stud wall, standard studs will not take a fold-down bar at all; you need a timber noggin or metal pattress fitted between the studs, or a fixing that reaches through to solid masonry behind, because a self-drilling or toggle fixing into 0.5mm steel alone will pull out under leverage. For lath and plaster, avoid screwing into the thin laths — locate a joist or stud behind them, or fix through to masonry if the wall is solid, since laths crumble under load.

FB-05Mark and drill the fixing holesHold the brackets against the wall, level them with a spirit level, and mark each hole through the fixing plate with a pencil. For dot-and-dab, drill through the plasterboard and dab void first, then swap to a masonry bit and drill on into the brick or block behind, to a total depth of around 70mm to 90mm depending on the anchor length. Drill slowly and check for dust colour and resistance changes as you go, which tells you when you've crossed from plasterboard into the void and then into masonry.

FB-06Fit the anchorsPush each sleeve anchor into its hole and tap it gently with a hammer until the sleeve sits flush against the plasterboard, bridging the void behind. Don't fully tighten yet — you want some play to adjust the bracket into line first.

FB-07Fix the wall bracketsLine the brackets up on the anchors, check level again along the top edge, and tighten the bolts fully with a spanner or the driver bit supplied. Tighten evenly across both brackets so neither side pulls the plasterboard tighter than the other.

FB-08Attach the worktop and fold-down legsFix the worktop to the top of the wall brackets following the kit's fixing points, usually with short self-tapping screws into pre-marked points underneath. Fit the fold-down support leg or bracket at the front edge, checking it swings freely and locks flat when down.

FB-09Test and load-check the barFold the bar down and back up a few times to check the hinge moves smoothly and locks securely when up. Lean on it firmly with both hands to check the wall fixings don't flex or creak, then retighten any bolts that have loosened.
FB-10Tidy upVacuum up all masonry and plasterboard dust from the floor and skirting. Check the wall around the fixings for cracks or crumbling plaster, and fill any small gaps with a quick-set filler once the fixings are fully tightened. Wipe the worktop down before use.
