Fit a new latch to a garden gate so it lines up, closes properly and holds shut in the wind.
GL-01Check the gate before you startOpen and close the gate a few times. It should swing freely and meet the post square, without dragging on the ground. If the gate has dropped or twisted, sort the hinges first — a new latch will not fix a gate that does not close properly.
GL-02Choose the right latch for your gateA thumb latch (Suffolk latch) suits a simple garden gate you open by hand. A self-closing or automatic latch is better for pool, drive or field gates where the gate must latch itself shut. Check the pack — most standard latches suit gates from 25mm to 45mm thick; measure your gate's stile first.
GL-03Gather your toolsYou'll need a drill/driver, a pencil, a tape measure, and a countersink or bradawl for starting screws. Wear eye protection when drilling — old gate timber can be surprisingly hard and can splinter.
GL-04Position and mark the latch on the gateHold the latch body against the gate at a comfortable height, usually around 900-1000mm from the ground. Use a spirit level to keep it horizontal, then mark the screw holes through the plate with a pencil.
GL-05Drill pilot holes and fix the latch bodyDrill a pilot hole about 2mm smaller than the screw at each marked point, roughly 20-25mm deep, to stop the wood splitting. Screw the latch body to the gate with the fixings supplied, checking it still sits level once tightened.

GL-06Close the gate and mark the catch positionWith the latch body fitted, close the gate fully and hold the catch or keep plate against the post where the latch bar will land. Mark through the fixing holes onto the post, keeping everything level and square to the latch.
GL-07Drill and fit the catch plate on the postDrill pilot holes into the post at your marks, about 20-25mm deep. Screw the catch plate on, then close the gate and test it several times. Adjust the plate slightly if the latch is loose or won't drop cleanly into place.
GL-08Weatherproof and tidy upDab a little exterior wood paint or clear sealant over any bare screw heads or fresh drill marks to stop water getting in. Sweep up any wood shavings and put your tools away.
