Fit a glass splashback

Fit a glass splashback with the right adhesive, fixings for your wall type, and safety checks before you drill.

GS-01Check your glass and plan the jobConfirm your splashback is toughened glass, cut to the exact size, with any socket or switch cut-outs already machined in — toughened glass can't be cut on site once it's made. Check the panel for chips or scratches before you start, especially on the edges. Plan for a 3mm gap all round: between the glass and the worktop, and at each side against units or walls.

GS-02Clear and protect the work areaClear everything off the worktop and take down anything hanging on the wall behind it. Cover the hob, sink and worktop with a dust sheet or cardboard to catch dust and adhesive drips. Open a window if you're using a solvent-based adhesive or sealant.

GS-03Turn off the power before touching any socketsIf any sockets or switches sit within the splashback area, switch off their circuit at the consumer unit before you remove the faceplates. Test the socket is dead with a socket tester, or by trying an appliance in it. Leave the circuit off until the faceplates are refitted later in the job.

GS-04Remove socket and switch faceplatesWith the power off, unscrew and pull off any faceplates behind the splashback area. Ease the wiring back into the box so it's out of the way, and tape loose wires so they don't fall further in. Leave the mounting box in the wall — you'll screw the faceplate back through the glass later.

GS-05Prepare the wall surfaceStrip any wallpaper and wash off grease with sugar soap, especially near the hob. Sand gloss paint so the adhesive has something to grip, and remove old tiles completely — the adhesive needs a flat, sound surface, not a tiled one. Let the wall dry fully before you carry on.

GS-06Work out what's behind the wallIf you're adding mechanical fixings as well as adhesive, you need to know what's behind the surface. Run a stud detector or a strong magnet across the wall — a magnet catches on the screw heads holding plasterboard to a timber or metal frame, showing the line of studs. Tap the wall: a dull thud usually means solid brick or block, a hollow sound means studwork or dot-and-dab. Drill a small pilot hole where you plan to fix — pale fine dust means timber, grey dust means brick or block, and shiny metal filings mean a metal stud.

GS-07Mark and drill your fixing pointsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a kitchen wall, especially near a hob or sink. Use a cable and pipe detector, but still assume something is there until you've proved otherwise — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or outside the usual safe zones, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further. Before drilling, find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns. If you're at all unsure, turn off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit and the water off at the stopcock before you drill. Solid brick or block: drill a 6mm hole 40-50mm deep, fit a matching wall plug, then the screw and cap from your fixing kit. Plasterboard on timber studs: find the centre of the stud, drill a 3mm pilot hole, and use a wood screw biting at least 25mm into the timber. Plasterboard on metal studs: never use a wood screw or a plastic plug — it strips straight through 0.5mm steel; use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing instead. Dot-and-dab plasterboard: use a long fixing, typically 60-75mm, reaching through the board and the dab void into the solid masonry behind, with a plug rated for that masonry. Lath and plaster: this is fragile — fix into the timber joist or batten behind the laths where you can, otherwise use a hollow-wall fixing rated for lath and plaster, not a standard plasterboard toggle.

GS-08Apply the glass adhesiveApply a dedicated glass splashback adhesive to the back of the glass, following the manufacturer's bead pattern. Don't rely on ordinary silicone alone, especially behind a hob, as it isn't rated for that heat. Leave gaps in the bead pattern so trapped air can escape when you press the glass into place.

GS-09Position the glassRest plastic spacers on the worktop to hold the 3mm gap, then lift the glass into place against the wall — get someone to help, it's heavy and awkward for one person. Press evenly across the whole panel, not just the edges, and check it's level. If you're using mechanical fixings, push the fixing caps into the pre-drilled holes now and tighten by hand only — glass cracks if you overtighten.

GS-10Leave the adhesive to cureLeave the glass completely undisturbed for the time stated on the adhesive, usually 24-48 hours. Don't use the hob or splash water near the area during this time, and keep the spacers in place until the adhesive has fully cured.
GS-11Refit faceplates and restore the powerOnce cured, screw the socket and switch faceplates back on through the cut-outs in the glass, with the circuit still off. Run a thin bead of clear silicone around each faceplate so water can't track behind it. Switch the circuit back on at the consumer unit and test the socket works before moving on.

GS-12Seal all the edgesRun a continuous bead of silicone sealant along the bottom edge, the side edges against units or walls, and the top edge if it meets a trim strip. Smooth it with a sealant tool or a wet finger and wipe away any excess straightaway.

GS-13Clean up and check your workPeel off the protective covering and clean the glass with a non-abrasive glass cleaner — avoid anything gritty that could scratch it. Check every fixing is tight, faceplates sit flush, and the sealant lines are even all round. Put the worktop items back once the sealant has skinned over.
