Fit a hanging basket bracket to an exterior brick wall
Fix a hanging basket bracket safely into solid brick with the right plug, screw, and pull test before you load it.
HB-01Gather your tools and materialsYou need a hammer drill or SDS drill, a masonry bit, wall plugs, screws sized for the bracket, a spirit level, and a pencil. Check the bracket's fixing holes first — most take a No.8 or No.10 screw, which needs a 6mm plug and a 6mm masonry bit. Wear safety goggles and a dust mask, and lay a dust sheet below your work area.
HB-02Choose the spot and check what's behind itPick a height around 1.8m to 2m so the basket clears head height but you can still reach it to water. Even on an outside wall, cables for lights, alarms, or a satellite dish can run close to the surface, and pipework for an outside tap may be nearby. Run a detector over the spot, but treat it as a helpful check rather than proof — detectors miss cables in metal conduit or buried deeper than expected.
HB-03Drill the pilot holeBefore you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about what's behind the wall, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit first. Mark the hole with a pencil, hold the drill level, and drill at a right angle to the wall using hammer action, going about 5mm deeper than the plug length to leave room for dust.
HB-04Fit the wall plugBlow or brush the dust out of the hole so the plug can grip properly. Push the wall plug in until it sits flush with the brick face — tap it gently with a hammer if it's tight. Don't force an oversized plug into a hole that's too small; redrill slightly larger instead.
HB-05Screw in the bracketHold the bracket against the wall, check it's level, and drive the screw through the fixing hole into the plug. Tighten until the bracket sits firm and doesn't wobble, but stop once it's snug — overtightening can crack the plug or the brick face. Check the level again before moving on.
HB-06Pull-test the fixingHang something light on the bracket first and pull down firmly to check it holds without movement or crumbling around the hole. A loaded hanging basket with wet compost can weigh 5-10kg, so the fixing needs to feel completely solid before you trust it with the full weight.
HB-07Hang the basket and tidy upHang the basket on the bracket and check it swings clear of the wall and any nearby windows or doors. Sweep or vacuum up brick dust from the ground and dust sheet, and wipe down the wall face. Store leftover plugs and screws for next time.
