SH-02Check for buried cables and pipes before drillingIf you're anchoring into a concrete or paving base, garden power cables (for lighting, a pond pump, an outbuilding supply) and water pipes can run underneath, often shallower than you'd expect and not always in a straight line. Run a cable and pipe detector over the whole area first, but still treat every spot as live until you've drilled a small test hole and checked what comes out. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and make sure it turns before you start, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If a cable detector gives any uncertain reading, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
