Fit a solar security light to a rendered exterior wall

Fix a solar security light to rendered brickwork with the correct masonry plugs, positioned for maximum sun and clear coverage at night.

SL-01Choose the best spot on the wallPick a spot that gets direct sun for most of the day (south or west-facing is best) so the solar panel charges properly. Mount the light 2000-2500mm up, angled so the passive infrared (PIR) sensor covers the path, drive or door you want lit, not a busy road or a neighbour's cat run. Avoid a spot right under a soffit or gutter overhang that blocks the panel from the sky.
SL-02Gather your tools and materialsYou'll need the light and its fixing kit, a masonry drill bit, wall plugs and screws sized to the bracket holes, a spirit level, and exterior-grade sealant for afterwards. If you're tempted to buy a mains-wired security light instead of a solar one, be aware that's different work.

KNOW THE RULES

A mains-wired outdoor light needs a new outdoor circuit or spur. That's notifiable electrical work under Part P of the Building Regulations — get a registered electrician, or have it checked by one.

SL-03Work out what's behind the renderMost rendered exterior walls are solid brick or block underneath — the drill will bite hard and give solid brick-red or grey dust. Some newer timber-framed houses have render over a timber-and-board wall instead; tap the wall and listen for a hollower sound, and a test pilot hole will bring out pale timber dust rather than masonry dust. If you find timber, you must fix into the actual timber framing behind the boards, not just the render skin, or the fixing will pull straight out.
SL-04Check for hidden cables and pipes before you drillRun a cable and pipe detector over the exact spot, in both directions, before you drill — outdoor walls can hide alarm cables, satellite feeds, old TV aerial cable, or an overflow pipe from a tank inside. Detectors miss things too, especially deep cables or anything behind metal-backed render mesh, so treat the wall as if something is there until you prove otherwise. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all about what's behind this spot, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before you drill.
SL-05Drill and fit the fixingsMark the bracket's fixing holes on the wall with a pencil, using a spirit level to keep it straight. Drill through the render into the brick or block behind using a 6mm masonry bit, going about 5mm deeper than the plug length so the plug seats fully in solid masonry, not just in the render coat. Push in the red wall plugs, then hold the bracket up and drive in the screws until snug — don't overtighten, as render can crack.
SL-06Attach the light and set the sensorClip or screw the light body onto the bracket and angle the head so the PIR sensor faces the area you want covered. Set the sensitivity and detection range dials on the back of the unit to a medium setting to start with. Set any 'on time' dial to a short duration first — you can lengthen it later once you know how it behaves.
SL-07Seal the fixing and tidy upRun a thin bead of exterior-grade mastic around the top and sides of the bracket base, where it meets the render, to stop rainwater tracking in behind the fixing. Leave the bottom edge unsealed so any moisture that does get in can drain out. Sweep up drilling dust and dispose of packaging.
SL-08Let it charge and test over a few nightsLeave the panel to charge in daylight for a full day before relying on it, especially if it's cloudy weather. After dark, walk through the detection zone to check the light triggers, and adjust the range, sensitivity or angle if it's too eager or too slow. Check again after a few nights, as most units need a small tweak once you see it working in real conditions.
