Fit an outdoor security camera to a rendered exterior wall

Mount a weatherproof security camera on a rendered wall, run the cable indoors, and connect it to power safely.

AB-01Plan the position and cable routePick a spot 2.4m to 3m up, covering the door or gate you want to watch, with a clear line to your router or power point. Work out whether the cable will run externally along the wall or through to the inside. If the camera can see into next door's garden or a shared path, check the ICO's guidance on domestic CCTV before you fit it.

AB-02Gather tools and materialsGet everything together before you're up a ladder. Check the camera kit includes a mounting plate, screws and a weatherproof cable gland or grommet — if not, buy them separately.

AB-03Check for cables and pipes, and know your isolation pointsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the 'safe zones' — run a detector over the wall first, but still treat it as if something could be there, especially near the meter, consumer unit or any outside socket. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you're running new cable back to the consumer unit rather than plugging into an existing socket, isolate that circuit at the consumer unit before you touch it.

AB-04Drill the cable entry hole through the external wallMark the hole below the camera position, angled slightly downward from outside to inside so rainwater runs out, not in. Drill through the render slowly on a low speed to stop it cracking, then switch to full speed through the brick or block behind it. A 10mm hole is enough for most single camera cables; check your kit's cable diameter first.

AB-05Fix the mounting plate to the renderDrill your fixing holes the same way — slow through render, then full speed into the brick or block. Use a wall plug rated for the wall thickness and a screw long enough to bite at least 30mm into solid masonry behind the render. Typically this means a 6mm plug and a 60-70mm screw, but check what came with your camera kit.

AB-06Run the cable through an internal wall, if neededIf the cable needs to reach a router or power point inside, work out what the internal wall is made of before you drill. Tap it — solid brick or block sounds dead and dull; a stud wall sounds hollow between the uprights. Run a detector or magnet along a horizontal line at socket height to find the screw line of a plasterboard-on-stud wall, and check for a cold, slightly springy feel that suggests dot-and-dab over solid masonry, or a slightly bouncy, powdery feel that suggests old lath and plaster.

AB-07Choose the right fixing for the wall you're passing throughFor solid brick or block, drill a pilot hole with a masonry bit sized to your cable, no fixing needed for a simple pass-through. For timber studs, drill through the centre of the stud with a wood bit slightly larger than the cable. For metal studs (common in flats and anything built or refitted since the 1990s), drill a small pilot hole first — fine steel swarf, not wood dust, confirms metal — then use a step drill or hole saw rated for metal, never force a wood bit through. For dot-and-dab plasterboard, check there's masonry behind before drilling deep; the board sits on foam dabs with an air gap behind it, so a cable can often just run through the void. For lath and plaster, drill gently to avoid cracking the old lime plaster, and expect thin wooden laths behind the surface.

AB-08Connect the camera to powerIf your camera plugs into an existing outdoor socket via its own low-voltage transformer, just plug it in — no electrical work needed. If you're hardwiring new cable back to the consumer unit or fitting a new outdoor socket, this is notifiable electrical work and should be done by a registered electrician or checked by Building Control.

Under Part P of the Building Regulations, new fixed electrical wiring outdoors or a new circuit must be installed by a registered electrician or notified to Building Control. Plugging into an existing socket with the camera's own low-voltage adaptor is not notifiable.

AB-09Seal the cable entry pointFit the weatherproof grommet or cable gland supplied with your kit around the cable where it passes through the wall. Run a bead of exterior-grade sealant around the outside edge of the hole to stop rain getting in, and smooth it with a wet finger.

AB-10Position, connect and test the cameraClip the camera onto the mounting plate and adjust the angle to cover the area you planned. Connect it to your Wi-Fi or app following the manufacturer's instructions, and check the live view and night vision both work.
AB-11Tidy upSweep up any render or brick dust from below the wall and vacuum any dust inside near the cable entry point. Bin the packaging and check the sealant has fully cured before the next rain, usually 24 hours.
