Fit a solar security light to a timber fence or shed

Fit a solar security light to solid timber on your fence or shed, checking for hazards and sunlight first.

SL-01Pick the right spotChoose a spot that gets 4-6 hours of direct sun a day, ideally south-facing. Mount it 2-3m high so the sensor covers the area you want lit, such as a gate or path. Keep it away from other lights, as these can stop the sensor triggering.
SL-02Check your kit and charge the batteryUnpack the light and check you have the bracket, screws and any wall plugs supplied. Pull the plastic tab from the battery compartment and leave the light in daylight for a few hours before fitting, so it has some charge for testing later. Read the manual for the sensitivity and timer settings.

SL-03Check for hazards before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, including up fence posts and into sheds with power already fitted. Use a detector, but still treat the timber with caution — detectors can miss cables in conduit or run at odd angles. If your shed has an electric supply, isolate it at the consumer unit before drilling anywhere near existing wiring, and know where your stopcock is (usually under the kitchen sink) if there's any chance of hitting a buried pipe.
SL-04Find solid timber to fix intoFence panels and thin shed cladding are often only 12-19mm thick and won't hold a fixing well on their own. Fix into a fence post, arris rail, or the shed's timber frame instead — press and knock along the surface to find where it feels solid rather than hollow. Mark your fixing point with a pencil.
SL-05Mark and drill pilot holesHold the bracket in place and mark the screw positions with a pencil. Drill a pilot hole for each mark, using a bit slightly narrower than the screw shank, to about 20mm deep — this stops the timber splitting and makes the screws easier to drive.

SL-06Screw the bracket in placeDrive the screws supplied with the light into the pilot holes until the bracket sits flush and doesn't wobble. Check it's level using a spirit level before you fully tighten the last screw.

SL-07Attach the light and set the angleClip or screw the light onto the bracket. Angle the solar panel towards where it will get the most sun, and angle the light itself towards the area you want covered. Set the sensor sensitivity and timer as per the manual, usually with a small dial or button on the underside.
SL-08Test it and tidy upCover the sensor with your hand in daylight, or wait until dusk, to check the light triggers correctly. Adjust the angle or sensitivity if it's too sensitive or doesn't catch the right area. Sweep up any sawdust and put your tools away.
