Fit an outdoor security camera to a timber fence or shed

Mount an outdoor camera on your fence or shed, run a weatherproof cable into your home, and connect it safely.

CAM-01Plan the position and power routeWalk the garden and pick a spot with a clear view of the area you want covered, ideally 2.4-3m up so it's out of easy reach. Check your WiFi signal actually reaches that spot - a weak signal means dropped footage later. Decide how the camera will get power: an existing outdoor socket, a mains cable run into the house, or a battery or solar unit that needs no cable at all.
CAM-02Check the fence or shed timber before you fix anythingPush a bradawl or small screwdriver into the post or shed frame - if it sinks in easily, the wood is rotten and won't hold a screw. Find the solid corner post or main frame timber rather than a thin fence board, which will flex and eventually pull the bracket loose. Hold the bracket in place and mark your fixing points in pencil, checking the camera's view before you drill anything.

CAM-03Find hidden pipes and cables before drilling the house wallBefore you drill through the house wall for the cable, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. Run a cable and pipe detector over the inside wall where the cable will come through, but still assume something could be there - detectors miss cables in metal conduit, deep runs, and anything behind metal-backed board. If you have any doubt at all, switch off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.

CAM-04Fix the mounting bracket to the timberDrill a pilot hole into the solid post or frame timber, sized to about 2-2.5mm for a No.8 screw, so the wood doesn't split. Use a stainless steel wood screw at least 40mm long, driven into the centre of the timber - not near the edge, where it can split out. Hold a spirit level against the bracket before you fully tighten the screws, so the camera sits level.

CAM-05Drill the cable entry hole through the house wallFor solid brick or block, drill from outside using a 10mm masonry bit, angled very slightly downward towards the outside so rain runs back out rather than in - you should see dust, not swarf. If your exterior wall is timber-framed (common on newer extensions or timber-clad houses), work out if you're going through a timber stud or a metal stud first: track along with a detector or magnet for a line of fixings, and check whether a small pilot hole brings out timber dust (timber stud) or fine bright metal filings (metal stud or track). You're only piercing the frame for the cable here, not loading it, but keep the hole tight and note that metal-framed walls often have a vapour barrier that needs taping back up once the cable is through.

CAM-06Feed the cable through and seal the holePush the cable through the hole and fit a rubber cable-entry grommet to keep out draughts and insects. Seal around the grommet on the outside with exterior-grade silicone sealant, smoothing it with a wet finger for a neat, weatherproof finish. Leave it to cure for the time stated on the tube before you put any tension on the cable.

CAM-07Route and clip the cableRun the cable along the straightest safe route across the fence, shed and wall, keeping it clear of gates, mower paths and anywhere it could be snagged or trodden on. Clip it every 300mm with cable clips suited to the surface. If the cable finishes on a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall inside, use a fixing long enough to reach the solid wall behind the foam dabs, not just the plasterboard, as that air gap can be 20-50mm deep. On an older lath-and-plaster wall, drill a small pilot hole and use a lightweight fixing so you don't crack the plaster keys behind it.

CAM-08Connect the power supplyIf you're plugging into an existing outdoor socket, use the camera's own weatherproof plug and check the socket is RCD-protected. Don't run an indoor extension lead outside as a permanent supply - it isn't weatherproof and isn't meant to stay outdoors. If you don't have a suitable outdoor socket and need a new one fitted, or a new circuit run to it, that's separate electrical work and not part of this job.

Installing a new outdoor socket or a new circuit is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. Use a registered electrician or notify building control.

CAM-09Mount, angle and test the cameraClip or screw the camera onto the fixed bracket, then connect it to power and to your WiFi through the app. Adjust the angle to cover the area you planned, checking the live picture and night vision before you fully tighten the bracket. Do a quick test with a hose on a mist setting, not a jet, to check the seals hold before you rely on it.
CAM-10Check what the camera actually capturesAngle the camera to cover your own property, not a neighbour's garden, window or a shared path, wherever you can help it. If it does pick up next door's garden, a shared driveway or the street, you're responsible for how that footage is used, and it's worth telling your neighbour what the camera covers and why.

This isn't a Building Regulation - it's UK data protection guidance (ICO) on domestic CCTV. Most home cameras fall under a 'domestic purposes' exemption, but it's good practice to follow anyway.

CAM-11Tidy up and check it's workingSweep up any masonry dust and wipe down surfaces. Coil and store spare cable neatly, and put offcuts and packaging in general waste. Check the app footage again after 24 hours to confirm everything's still working as expected.
