Fit a stair gate to a banister

Fit a pressure-free stair gate to a banister safely, checking what's behind each fixing point before drilling and testing it holds firm.

SG-01Check the kit and decide your fixing pointsUnpack the gate and lay out all parts: the gate, wall fixing kit, and banister/spindle kit. Most gates use a wall fixing kit on one side (screwed into the wall or newel post) and a spindle kit on the other (straps round the banister rails, no drilling). Check the gate's width range covers your stairway opening before you go further.

SG-02Measure the opening and mark fixing heightsMeasure the gap at the top, middle and bottom of the opening, and use the narrowest measurement. Following the manufacturer's instructions, mark two fixing points on each side, usually about 30mm from the top and 30mm from the bottom of the gate frame. Use a spirit level to check the marks line up level on both sides.

SG-03Work out what's behind the wall-side fixing pointIf one side fixes to a wall or masonry newel post, find out what you're drilling into. Run a magnet or stud detector along the wall to pick up screw heads in a vertical line — that's a timber stud. A dull hollow sound when you tap the wall between marks suggests plasterboard on studs; a solid sound suggests masonry or dot-and-dab. A small pilot hole tells you for sure: fine wood dust means timber stud, grey powder means masonry or dot-and-dab, and bright metal swarf means a metal stud track.

SG-04Do your safety checks before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the 'safe zones'. Use a detector, but still assume something could be there — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board, and a metal stud frame can confuse cheap detectors further. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
SG-05Fix the wall bracket — solid brick or blockDrill a 6mm hole 40mm deep at each marked point using a masonry bit. Insert a 6mm plastic wall plug, then screw the fixing plate on with 50mm screws until snug. Do not overtighten — a cracked plug won't hold.

SG-06Fix the wall bracket — plasterboard on timber studsCentre each fixing point on the stud you found in step SG-03. Drive a 45mm wood screw straight into the middle of the stud — no plug needed. Avoid the edges of the stud, where the screw can miss the timber altogether.

SG-07Fix the wall bracket — plasterboard on metal studsNever use a wood screw or plastic plug on a metal stud — it strips straight through 0.5mm steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing, or a toggle-type hollow wall anchor rated for the gate's pull weight, driven into the metal track behind the board. A stair gate takes repeated tugging and knocks, so if the fixing feels loose or the metal track is thin, fit a timber noggin between the studs instead, or fix through to masonry if there is one nearby.

SG-08Fix the wall bracket — dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab has an air gap between the plasterboard and the masonry behind. Use a fixing long enough to pass through the board, cross the gap, and bite into the masonry — typically a 75mm plasterboard-and-masonry screw fixing with a plastic sleeve. A short screw that only grips the board will pull straight out under the gate's regular use.

SG-09Fix the wall bracket — lath and plasterOld lath and plaster is brittle and can crack if you drill straight in. Drill a small pilot hole first to check you're between laths, then use a spring toggle or plasterboard-rated hollow wall anchor sized for the fixing point's likely load. If plaster crumbles around the hole, stop and pack it with a little filler before fitting the fixing, or move the fixing point slightly to firmer plaster.

SG-10Fit the banister-side bracket with a spindle kitWrap the spindle kit's straps around two adjacent banister spindles at your marked heights, then tighten evenly so the bracket sits flush and doesn't twist. Don't drill into the spindle itself — it weakens the banister and isn't needed for this kit to hold. Check the straps are fully tightened; a loose strap will let the gate rock.

SG-11Hang the gate and set the latchClip or bolt the gate into both fixing cups. Check it swings freely, closes fully, and the latch engages without you needing to lift or force it. Adjust the hinge tension or latch screws if the gate doesn't self-close properly.
SG-12Test it properly and tidy upPush and pull the gate firmly from both sides, and lean your weight on the top rail to check nothing moves or creaks. Open and close it a few times to make sure the latch is reliable. Vacuum up any drilling dust, and dispose of packaging and any offcuts.
