WP-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillExterior walls carry cables and pipes too — outdoor lights, sockets and alarm sensors are often wired through masonry, and waste or supply pipes can run close to the surface. Run a detector over every marked point, but still treat the wall as if something could be there — cheap detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or at odd angles. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns before you start, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
