Fit a wall planter to a timber fence or shed

Fix a wall planter securely to a fence or shed by finding solid timber and using the right outdoor screws.

FP-01Check the fence or shed is soundPush and wobble the panel, post or shed wall where you plan to fix the planter. Look for soft, spongy or crumbling wood, black rot, or loose panels. Do not fix a planter to timber that flexes, feels damp and soft, or is visibly rotten — it will not hold the weight once the compost is wet.
FP-02Gather your tools and materialsYou'll need a cordless drill/driver, a pilot drill bit, a spirit level, a tape measure and a pencil. Buy screws or coach screws rated for outdoor use (stainless steel or yellow zinc-plated) — untreated steel screws rust and stain the timber and planter.

FP-03Work out exactly what you're fixing intoA fence panel is mostly thin, hollow-sounding slats with solid horizontal arris rails behind them roughly every 300-450mm — tap along the panel and listen for the change from hollow to solid. A fence post is solid timber all the way through. Shed walls are thin cladding boards nailed or screwed over a timber frame — tap the same way, or look for the vertical line of nail or screw heads that marks where the frame sits underneath.
FP-04Mark your fixing points and check for cablesMark the planter or bracket holes with a pencil, using the spirit level to keep it straight. If the shed has an electric supply run to it (lighting, a socket, or a power tool feed), treat the wall like an indoor stud wall: cables can run inside the frame and a cheap detector won't reliably find them through timber cladding. If there's any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before you drill. A plain garden fence carries no services, so this risk doesn't apply there.
FP-05Drill pilot holes sized to the timberDrill a pilot hole about 2mm narrower than your screw's core into solid posts or a shed's frame. Thin fence panel slats split easily, so use a slightly smaller pilot hole there and drive screws slowly. Never fix into thin slats alone if you can reach an arris rail or the shed's frame instead — thin timber will eventually pull the screw out.

FP-06Fix the bracket, adding a batten if neededOn a solid post, screw the bracket straight in. On a fence panel, fix into an arris rail; if your fixing points don't line up with a rail, screw a timber batten horizontally across two rails first, then fix the bracket to the batten. On a shed, screw through the cladding into the frame behind, using screws long enough to bite at least 25mm into the frame itself, not just the thin cladding board.

FP-07Hang the planter and test itHang the planter empty first and check it sits level and doesn't shift. Add compost and plants gradually, checking the fixing each time, rather than loading it up in one go. Give the whole thing a firm push and pull — it should not move at the fixing point.
FP-08Weatherproof and tidy upDab a little wood preservative or exterior sealant over any exposed screw heads and new drill holes to stop water getting in. Sweep up sawdust and off-cuts, and put away your tools.
