Fit sliding wire baskets into a kitchen base unit for easy-access storage, following the kit's own runner instructions.
KB-01Check the basket kit fits your unitMeasure the internal width, height and depth of the cabinet with the door open. Compare this to the size printed on the basket kit box — kits usually come in 300, 400, 500 and 600mm widths to match standard UK cabinet sizes. Check there's enough depth for the basket to slide out fully without hitting the worktop above or a drawer front.
KB-02Clear the cabinet and remove the doorEmpty everything out of the unit. Unscrew the door hinges from the cabinet side using a cross-head screwdriver and set the door aside somewhere safe. Wipe out the inside so you can see clearly where you're marking and drilling.
KB-03Mark the runner positionsUse the paper template or gauge supplied with the kit to mark screw positions on both cabinet sides. Most kits want the top runner around 30-40mm below the worktop, with the others spaced evenly down — check the diagram in your kit's instructions. Use a spirit level to keep the marks level on both sides, or the basket will jam as it slides.
KB-04Fix the runners to the cabinet sidesDrill pilot holes at the size stated in the kit instructions — usually 2mm for the self-tapping screws supplied. Screw each runner to the cabinet side, checking it's level before fully tightening. Repeat on the opposite side, matching the height exactly so the basket sits level and doesn't tip.
KB-05Fit the baskets onto the runnersLift each wire basket and clip it onto the runners, following the kit's fitting sequence — usually back edge first, then lowering the front down onto the rail. Slide it in and out a few times to check it runs freely without catching on the cabinet sides.
KB-06Adjust for a smooth, level slideIf a basket rubs or jams, loosen the runner screws slightly and nudge the height by a millimetre or two before retightening. Check side-to-side that the basket doesn't lean or catch the frame. A thin packer behind one runner can correct a cabinet that's slightly out of square.
KB-07Refit the door and check clearanceRehang the cabinet door if it needs to clear the basket when opening — some baskets need the door removed permanently, others just need the hinge position adjusted slightly. Open and close the door and slide the baskets fully in and out to check nothing catches.
KB-08Load test and tidy upPut a realistic load of items in each basket and slide them in and out a few times to settle the fixings in place. Wipe down the cabinet and baskets, then put your tools away.
