Fit shelves in a room with a sloping ceiling

Fit level shelves along a sloping ceiling by marking the slope, checking what's behind it, and using the right fixing.

SH-01Plan the shelf line and mark the slopeDecide how many shelves you want and how far apart. Hold a shelf in place and use a spirit level to see how the slope changes the height along its length — sloped ceilings mean the top of each bracket needs a slightly different position to keep the shelf level. Mark a light pencil line where the top edge of the shelf will sit, checking with the level every 300mm.

SH-02Work out what's behind the sloped surfaceSloped ceilings in converted rooms are usually plasterboard fixed to timber rafters, but newer conversions sometimes use metal studwork, and older houses may have lath and plaster instead. Run a stud detector or a strong magnet along the line — a magnet will catch on screw heads fixing the board to timber or metal studs, spaced roughly every 400mm or 600mm. Tap along the surface: a dull thud means solid backing (stud or masonry), a hollow sound means you're between fixings.

SH-03Confirm the wall type with a test holeDrill a small 3mm pilot hole at one marked point to check what's really there. Fine pale dust means timber; fine grey metal swarf means a metal stud; brick dust or solid resistance means masonry behind dot-and-dab or a solid slope wall. If the drill breaks through into a hollow void with no dust at all, you've likely found lath and plaster — go carefully, as the laths behind are thin and can crack.

SH-04Check for cables and pipes, and know your isolation pointsCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, including up through stud walls into sloped ceilings, so use a cable and pipe detector along your marked line before drilling. Detectors can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or running outside the usual safe zones — and a metal stud frame can confuse cheap detectors further, so still treat every hole as if something could be there. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.

There's no specific regulation covering shelf fixing, but Part P of the Building Regulations covers electrical safety — if you damage a cable, get it checked or repaired by a competent person, not just taped over.

SH-05Choose the right fixing for your wall typeFor solid brick or block behind the slope, drill to the fixing's stated depth with a masonry bit sized to match, insert a Rawlplug, then a wood screw. For plasterboard on timber studs, drive a wood screw straight into the centre of the stud — never rely on plasterboard alone. For plasterboard on metal studs, use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the shelf's weight; never use a plastic wall plug or ordinary wood screw, as these strip straight through 0.5mm steel. For dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a long fixing that reaches through the air gap into the solid masonry behind, not just the board. For lath and plaster, find the timber studs behind the laths where possible; if you must fix between them, use a specific lath-and-plaster or spring toggle fixing, as ordinary plugs crumble the old plaster.

SH-06Fit and level the bracketsFix the first bracket at your marked point, then use the spirit level to mark the second bracket position, allowing for the slope. Fix the second bracket and double-check both are level with each other before tightening fully. If the shelf is long, add a third bracket in the middle for support.

SH-07Fit the shelf and check it sits levelRest the shelf on the brackets and check it sits flat and level with the spirit level, adjusting brackets slightly if needed. Screw the shelf down to the brackets from underneath so the fixings don't show on top. Give the shelf a firm push to check it doesn't move.

SH-08Tidy up and load the shelf graduallyVacuum up dust and offcuts, especially plaster or masonry dust from drilling. Wipe down the shelf and surrounding area. Add items gradually over the next day or two rather than loading it fully straight away, so you can spot any movement in the fixings early.
