Put up a corner shelf on a solid brick or block wall
Fit a corner shelf to a solid brick or block wall safely, checking for cables and pipes before drilling.
CS-01Clear the area and gather your toolsMove furniture out of the way and lay a dust sheet on the floor below the corner. Get everything together first: shelf, brackets, screws, wall plugs, masonry drill bit, spirit level, pencil and a detector. Check your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you ever hit a pipe.
CS-02Mark the shelf position and check for cables and pipesHold the shelf or bracket in the corner and use a spirit level to mark a level line, then mark where each fixing hole will go. Run a detector over every mark before you drill. Detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or outside the normal safe zones near sockets and switches, so still treat the wall as if something is there. If you have any doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
CS-03Drill the pilot holes in the masonryFit a masonry bit matching the size of your wall plug, usually 6mm or 8mm, into a hammer drill or SDS drill. Drill each mark to a depth of about 45-50mm, slightly deeper than the plug and screw combined, and clear the dust as you go. Drill slowly at first so you can feel if you hit anything unexpected, and stop immediately if the dust changes colour or the drill jumps.
CS-04Fit the wall plugsPush a wall plug into each hole so it sits flush with the wall surface. If a plug feels loose or spins in the hole, the hole is too big or too deep in soft or old brick, so move the mark slightly and redrill, or use a bigger plug. Tap the plug in gently with the handle of a screwdriver if it needs help.
CS-05Screw the bracket or shelf to the wallHold the bracket or shelf against the marks and drive a screw into each plug, starting by hand until the screw bites, then finishing with a drill or screwdriver. Do not overtighten, or the plug can spin and lose its grip in the brick. Check the shelf sits flat against the wall with no gaps or rocking.
CS-06Check level and load graduallyPlace the spirit level along the top of the shelf and adjust if needed before the screws are fully tight. Once fixed, press down firmly on the shelf to test it before adding anything heavy. A well-fitted shelf on solid brick or block should not move or creak under normal use.
CS-07Tidy upVacuum up brick dust from the floor and wipe down the wall and skirting below. Fold away the dust sheet and put spare plugs and screws somewhere labelled for next time. Move furniture back once the area is clear.
