Fix a loose banister handrail

Learn how to spot why your banister rail is loose and refit it safely and securely for a solid, wobble-free stair rail.

FH-01Work out why the rail is looseGrip the handrail and gently push and pull it away from the wall. If only the screws holding the bracket to the rail are loose, you can simply tighten them. If the whole bracket moves and pulls slightly away from the wall, the wall fixing itself has failed and needs refitting, not just tightening.
FH-02Gather your tools and clear the stairsLay a dust sheet under the work area and remove anything from the stairs that could trip you. Use a stable step stool or ladder rated for stair use - never balance on the handrail itself. Have a screwdriver, drill/driver, pencil and torch ready.

FH-03Identify the wall behind the bracketRun a stud detector or a strong magnet over the wall around the bracket. A magnet that snags every 400-600mm is following screw heads over timber or metal studs. Tap the wall: a dull solid thud means brick or block, or masonry behind dot-and-dab; a hollow sound with occasional solid patches means dot-and-dab; a soft, springy feel and crackly sound on an older house means lath and plaster. Drill a small 2-3mm pilot hole and check what comes out - pale timber dust means timber stud or lath, grey dust means masonry, and bright metal swarf means a metal stud.

FH-04Take the bracket downSupport the handrail so it doesn't drop, then unscrew the bracket fully from the wall. Keep the old screws and plugs so you can match sizes when buying new fixings. Brush out dust and old plug fragments so you can see the wall material clearly.
FH-05Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the 'safe zones' you'd expect, so always sweep the area with a cable and pipe detector first. Still treat the wall as if something is there until you prove otherwise - detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or hidden by a metal stud frame. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling near it.
FH-06Fix into solid brick or blockDrill a 6mm hole about 40mm deep for a standard wall plug, or 8mm for a heavier-duty plug if the bracket holes are larger. Push in a matching wall plug and drive a 40-50mm screw through the bracket until snug. A handrail takes real pulling force, so use at least two fixing points per bracket, and drill a fresh hole nearby if the old one has crumbled.

FH-07Fix into plasterboard on timber studsOnce you've found the centre of a timber stud, drill a 3mm pilot hole and drive a 50-60mm wood screw straight into the timber - this is the strongest fixing a stud wall can give. If a fixing point doesn't line up with a stud, don't rely on plasterboard alone; move the bracket slightly or have a timber noggin fitted between the studs first. Countersink the screw head so the bracket sits flush.

FH-08Fix into plasterboard on metal studsNever use a plain wall plug or an ordinary wood screw in a metal stud - it strips straight through 0.5mm steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud screw straight into the stud, or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the load if fixing between studs. A handrail gets pulled on hard as people use it, so a metal stud alone is often not enough - get a timber noggin fitted between the studs, or fix through to solid masonry behind, if you can.

FH-09Fix into dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab plasterboard is stuck to masonry with blobs of adhesive, leaving air gaps behind it, so a plug in the plasterboard alone won't hold a handrail. Use a long fixing, typically 75-90mm, that passes through the plasterboard, across the air gap, and into a plug set in the masonry behind. Drill slowly so you don't snap the bit crossing the gap, and check the screw pulls up tight against solid masonry, not just plasterboard.

FH-10Fix into lath and plasterOld lath and plaster is thin timber strips under crumbly plaster, so a plug pushed into the plaster alone will pull straight out. Find the laths or an upright timber stud behind them with your detector or a pilot hole, then screw into solid timber, not just plaster. If the plaster around the hole is crumbling, widen it slightly and pack with a little grab adhesive before fitting the bracket, so the fixing isn't relying on loose plaster.

FH-11Refit the handrail and check it's solidScrew the bracket back onto the handrail, then lean your weight onto the rail at several points along its length. It should feel completely solid with no flex or movement at the wall. If any fixing feels spongy, remove it and refit with a longer or heavier-duty fixing rather than just tightening it further.
FH-12Tidy upVacuum up dust and debris from drilling, and wipe down the wall and handrail. Fill any old, unused fixing holes with a little filler and touch up with matching paint once dry. Put your tools away and remove the dust sheet.
