Fit a stair handrail to a solid brick or block wall

Fit a secure stair handrail into your wall, checking wall type first so you use the right fixings and correct height.

HR-01Plan the run and buy materialsMeasure the length of the stair run and decide where the handrail starts and ends. Most handrails sit on the side of the stair where people go up, fixed into the wall with 2-4 brackets depending on length. Buy a handrail (usually 32-45mm diameter pine or hardwood), matching wall brackets, and fixings to suit your wall type — you'll confirm which in the next step.

HR-02Work out what your wall is made ofTap the wall along the line where the handrail will run. A dull, solid sound usually means brick or block. A hollow sound with give in it usually means plasterboard on a stud wall, or dot-and-dab over masonry. Lath and plaster feels slightly springy and sounds hollow with a faint rattle. If it's a stud wall, run a detector or magnet along the surface to find the studs — screw heads holding the plasterboard usually sit in a vertical line every 400-600mm. Drill a small pilot hole at a suspected stud: timber dust means a timber stud, fine grey metal swarf means a metal stud (common in flats and anything built or refitted since the 1990s).

HR-03Mark the height and bracket positionsHandrails are usually fitted 900-1000mm above the pitch line of the stairs, measured vertically from the nosing of each step. Hold the handrail in place and use a spirit level to check the line is consistent from top to bottom, not just parallel with the stair pitch. Mark each bracket position — space them no more than 1000mm apart, with one near each end.

KNOW THE RULES

Building Regulations (Approved Document K) set a minimum stair handrail height of 900mm above the pitch line. This applies to new staircases and major alterations — if you're replacing a rail on an existing stair it's good practice to match this, but check with building control if you're unsure whether your job counts as an alteration.

HR-04Drill and fix brackets — solid brick or block wallBefore drilling, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. Use a detector on each marked point, but still expect a cable or pipe could be there — detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, and anything outside the usual safe zones. If in doubt, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling. Drill each bracket point with a 6-8mm masonry bit to the depth stated on your plug packet, fit a matching plastic wall plug, and drive in the screw provided with the bracket until it's firm but not overtightened.

HR-05Drill and fix brackets — stud, dot-and-dab or lath and plaster wallsSame cable and pipe check as before: confirm your stopcock works and use a detector, expecting it to miss something. Isolate the circuit at the consumer unit if you have any doubt. For a timber stud, drive a wood screw into the centre of the stud — never rely on plasterboard alone for a handrail, which takes constant pulling force. For a metal stud, never use a plain wall plug or wood screw — it will strip straight through 0.5mm steel; use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the load. For dot-and-dab, use a fixing long enough to pass through the plasterboard and adhesive dabs and bite into the masonry behind — a standard wall plug fixing sized for board depth won't hold a handrail on its own. For lath and plaster, avoid relying on the plaster or laths; find the timber studs behind and fix into those, or use long fixings into the masonry behind if the wall is solid with a plaster skim. A handrail takes constant pulling and leaning force, so if you can't get a solid fixing into timber or masonry at every bracket, fit a timber noggin between studs first, or fix through to the masonry behind.

HR-06Fit the handrail onto the bracketsRest the handrail across all fitted brackets and check it sits level along its whole length. Mark and drill through the underside of the rail into each bracket, then fix with the screws supplied. Check none of the screws come through the top or sides of the rail.

HR-07Test the rail under loadPush and pull firmly on the rail at several points along its length, including near the ends. It should feel completely solid with no movement or flex at the brackets. If any bracket moves, remove it, refit with a stronger fixing (see step HR-05 for stud walls), and test again before using the stairs normally.
HR-08Finish and tidy upFill any stray screw holes or marks with a suitable filler and sand smooth once dry. Wipe down the handrail and wall, then apply oil or varnish to a bare wood rail if needed. Vacuum up drilling dust and dispose of any masonry or plasterboard offcuts.
