Fix a sagging kitchen wall cupboard

Re-fix a sagging kitchen cupboard securely by finding your wall type and using the correct fixing throughout.

AB-01Clear the cupboard and the worktop belowEmpty everything from the cupboard onto the worktop or a table. Move anything breakable off the worktop underneath in case the cupboard comes free while you're working on it. Lay a dust sheet over the base units and worktop to catch dust and screws.

AB-02Identify your wall typeRun a stud detector, or a small strong magnet, slowly across the wall in a grid; the magnet grabs at screw heads over a timber stud wall or at the mesh in a metal stud wall. Tap the wall — solid brick or block sounds dull and solid everywhere, while stud walls and dot-and-dab sound hollow between fixing points. If you're still unsure, drill a small 3mm pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot: white dust means masonry or dot-and-dab, timber dust means a wood stud, and fine grey swarf means a metal stud. Metal stud walls are common in flats, new builds and anywhere refitted since the 1990s, so a hollow sound doesn't automatically mean timber.

AB-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a kitchen wall, not just in the obvious safe zones — a detector can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed plasterboard, and a metal stud frame confuses cheap detectors even more. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and don't drill near visible pipework or sockets without checking behind first.

AB-04Take the old cupboard downGet a helper to support the cupboard's weight while you undo the old fixing screws — kitchen wall cupboards are heavier and more awkward than they look, especially if they're not fully empty. Undo the screws through the hanging rail or back panel and lift the cupboard clear, then set it down somewhere safe. Check the old fixing holes: if a screw has pulled clean out of crumbled plaster or a stripped plasterboard hole, you need a stronger fixing, not just a longer screw in the same spot.
AB-05Patch and prepare the old fixing holesFill any torn or oversized holes with quick-setting filler so you have solid material to fix into, and let it go off fully before drilling nearby. Mark a new fixing point 20-30mm away from the old damaged hole, where the wall is sound. Hold the cupboard's hanging bracket against the wall and mark through the fixing holes with a pencil.

AB-06Fix into solid brick or blockDrill with a masonry bit sized to match your plug — typically 6mm for a No.8 screw — to a depth of at least 40mm, and clear the dust out of the hole. Insert a wall plug (Rawlplug) that matches the drill size, then drive in a 50-60mm masonry screw or a screw through the plug, checking the cupboard bracket sits flush. Solid masonry gives the strongest fixing of any wall type, so this is normally a permanent repair.

AB-07Fix into plasterboard on timber studsOnce you've found the centre of a timber stud, drill a small pilot hole and drive a 50mm wood screw straight into the timber through the cupboard's fixing point — no plug needed. If the stud doesn't line up with the cupboard's fixing holes, move the fixing point slightly along the rail, or fit a fixing that reaches into the stud rather than into bare plasterboard. Plasterboard alone, without a stud behind it, will not hold a kitchen cupboard.

AB-08Fix into plasterboard on metal studsUse a self-drilling metal stud screw or a metal-stud toggle fixing driven straight into the steel channel — never a plain wall plug or an ordinary wood screw, both strip straight through 0.5mm steel and won't hold. A single metal stud fixing isn't strong enough on its own for a loaded kitchen cupboard, especially with the strain of doors opening and closing. Wherever possible, fix through to a solid timber noggin fitted between the studs, or through the plasterboard and steel frame into masonry behind if there is any — get a competent tradesperson to fit a noggin if you're not confident cutting into the wall yourself.

AB-09Fix into dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab plasterboard is fixed to the masonry behind with blobs of adhesive, leaving gaps of 20-50mm, so a normal-length fixing only grips the board and will pull out under a cupboard's weight. Use a long fixing, typically 75-90mm, that passes through the plasterboard, the air gap and the adhesive dabs, and into the solid masonry behind, drilling to a depth that gives at least 40mm of engagement into the brick or block. Check with a pilot hole first to confirm the gap depth, since it varies from wall to wall.

AB-10Fix into lath and plasterLath and plaster walls have thin timber laths nailed across studs, with plaster keyed through the gaps, so drilling straight into the plaster alone cracks it and gives you nothing to hold onto. Locate the timber studs behind the laths the same way as a stud wall, then drive a 50mm wood screw into the centre of the stud, going slowly to avoid cracking the surrounding plaster. If the plaster around the hole is loose or crumbling, rake it out and patch it with bonding plaster before fixing the cupboard back.

AB-11Rehang the cupboard and check it's levelWith a helper holding the cupboard against the wall, drive the fixings home through the hanging rail or bracket, keeping the cupboard tight to the wall as you go. Rest a spirit level along the top and side of the cupboard and adjust before fully tightening the last screw. Give the door a gentle tug test — the cupboard shouldn't move or creak away from the wall.

AB-12Reload the cupboard and tidy upRefit any adjustable hinges if the doors have dropped slightly, then load the cupboard's contents back in, heaviest items first. Sweep up screws, dust and off-cuts, and fold away the dust sheet. Check the wall around the new fixing for hairline cracks and touch up with a dab of filler and matching paint if needed.
