KC-02Check for pipes and cables before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a kitchen wall, not just in the 'safe zones' — behind sockets, above the boiler feed, near the cold water rising main. Run a detector over the whole area first, but still treat every hole as if something could be there, especially near the sink, boiler or any socket. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about what's behind the wall, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
