Fix a sagging shelf

Diagnose why your shelf sags, then refix it securely and safely using the correct fixing for your wall type.

FS-01Work out why the shelf is saggingCheck whether the brackets have pulled away from the wall, the screws have worked loose, or the shelf itself is bowing under weight. Look for gaps between the bracket and the wall, cracks in the plaster around the fixings, or a shelf that dips in the middle. This tells you whether you just need to refix the brackets or also add a middle support.

FS-02Clear and take down the shelfRemove everything from the shelf. Lift the shelf off its brackets, then unscrew the brackets from the wall and keep the old screws to one side in case you need to match sizes.

FS-03Work out what's behind your wallUse a stud detector or a strong magnet, moving it across the wall in a line - a magnet will catch on screw heads under plasterboard, and a detector will also flag timber, metal studs, and cavities. Tap the wall: a dull, solid sound usually means masonry or a stud, while a hollow sound means only plasterboard. Drill a small 3mm test hole where you plan to fix - pale wood dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means a metal stud, and solid resistance with brick-coloured dust means masonry.

FS-04Check for cables and pipes, and turn off services if neededCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones, so always run a cable and pipe detector over the area before you drill - and still expect something to be there until you've proved otherwise, because detectors can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely before you start, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. Drill slowly and stop the moment you feel a change in resistance or see unusual dust. If you have any real doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit, and turn off the water at the stopcock before drilling on.

FS-05Fill and sand old fixing holesIf the old bracket holes are damaged or in the wrong place, fill them with a multi-purpose filler and let it dry fully - check the tin, but allow at least 1-2 hours. Sand the filled area smooth once dry.

FS-06Fix into solid brick or blockDrill a 6mm hole to a depth of 40-50mm using a masonry bit, then vacuum the dust out of the hole. Push in a matching wall plug rated for masonry, then drive a 50-60mm screw through the bracket into the plug. This is the strongest fixing available and will take a normal or heavy shelf load without extra support.

FS-07Fix into plasterboard on timber studsLocate the centre of the stud using your detector or pilot hole test, then drill a 2-3mm pilot hole into the timber. Drive a 40-50mm wood screw straight through the bracket into the centre of the stud - this alone holds a normal shelf load. Avoid screwing near the edge of a stud, as it can split or pull loose under weight.

FS-08Fix into plasterboard on metal studsNever use a plain wall plug or an ordinary wood screw in a metal stud - both strip straight through the 0.5mm steel and the fixing pulls out. Use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor, sized for the shelf's load, driven into the metal stud itself or the plasterboard between studs. A metal stud alone will not hold a heavy shelf or anything leaned or pulled on - for those, fit a timber noggin between the studs first, or fix through to the masonry behind if there is any.

FS-09Fix into dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab plasterboard sits on blobs of adhesive with a gap of roughly 10-40mm behind it before the solid wall starts. Use a long fixing, such as a 75-100mm frame fixing or plasterboard-and-masonry screw, that crosses this gap and grips at least 30mm into the masonry behind. Drill gently and check the fixing's length against the wall thickness so it doesn't stop short in the void.

FS-10Fix into lath and plasterLath and plaster is thin wooden strips under old plaster, and it crumbles easily around new holes. Tap along the wall to find a lath - a hollow-then-solid pattern - and screw into its centre with a 40mm wood screw, or use a hollow-wall toggle fixing spread across two laths if you can't hit one centrally. Drill a pilot hole first to stop the old plaster cracking further.

FS-11Add extra support for long or heavy shelvesIf the shelf is longer than about 900mm or carries heavy items such as books, add a third bracket at the centre using the fixing method for your wall type. On a stud wall, fit a timber noggin - a short length of 44x70mm timber - between two studs to give a solid fixing point for the middle bracket. This stops the shelf sagging again under load.

FS-12Level and refix the brackets and shelfHold the brackets in place and mark the fixing points with a pencil, then check the shelf will sit level using a spirit level before drilling anything. Fix both brackets using the method for your wall type, then lower the shelf onto the brackets and secure it with the screws provided. Check the shelf is firm and level before loading it up.

FS-13Reload the shelf graduallyPut items back onto the shelf gradually over a day or two, rather than all at once, and place heavier items nearer the brackets rather than in the middle. Check the brackets and surrounding wall after a day for any new cracks, movement, or fixings pulling loose. If anything moves, take the shelf down and add the extra middle bracket from FS-11.
FS-14Tidy upVacuum up plaster or masonry dust from the floor and skirting, then wipe down the wall with a damp cloth. Dispose of old screws, plugs and packaging responsibly. Store any spare fixings in a labelled bag for next time.
