Fit a bike hoist to a plasterboard ceiling

Fit a ceiling-mounted bike hoist safely, fixing into joists or a solid soffit rather than plasterboard alone.

AB-01Clear the area and check the kit against your ceilingClear the floor space under the fixing area and check the ceiling height gives enough clearance for the bike frame once raised. Check the hoist kit's hook spacing (usually 900-1000mm) against your ceiling and joist run, and plan where the cord will run down to a wall cleat, clear of any light fitting.

AB-02Work out what's above the plasterboardRun a stud/joist detector along the ceiling to find the joist line, and look for a row of screw or nail heads in the plasterboard as a giveaway. Tap along the ceiling: a solid knock is a joist, a hollow drum is the gap between them. Drill a 3mm test hole in an inconspicuous spot - pale dust means timber, fine grey swarf means a steel channel, and a hard resistant feel with barely a dent means a concrete soffit. Houses built before roughly 1930 often have lath-and-plaster ceilings - thin timber laths under lime plaster, still with joists behind - which is more fragile than plasterboard.

AB-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables can run across a ceiling in places a detector misses, especially near light fittings, in metal conduit, or stapled up inside a metal ceiling channel. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut the water off fast if you ever hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about what's behind your marked points, isolate the lighting circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
AB-04Mark out the hook positionsMeasure your bike's wheelbase and mark hook positions to match, following the kit's stated spacing, centred on a pair of joists. Use a spirit level or laser line so all four marks are level - fixing to one joist that dips lower than another will hang the bike at an angle.

AB-05Fit the ceiling hooks - method changes with what's behind the plasterboardTimber joist: drill a 4mm pilot hole into the centre of the joist and drive the hook's coach screw home by hand until tight - the timber alone takes the full load. Metal joist or channel (found in some flats and loft conversions): a wood screw or plastic plug will strip straight through 0.5mm steel, so use a self-drilling metal-frame fixing, or better, have a timber noggin bolted across the channels so you're screwing into solid timber. Lath-and-plaster ceiling: still locate the joist behind the laths, drill through the plaster carefully and into the joist, and back the hole with a wide washer to spread the load on the fragile plaster. Solid concrete soffit (some ground-floor flats): drill with a masonry bit to the plug's stated depth, clear the dust, and fit a load-rated plastic or nylon plug before driving the screw home. Never rely on plasterboard alone for any of these fixings - a pulley hoist pulls and jerks the ceiling as you winch, which will pull a plasterboard-only fixing straight out.

AB-06Fit the pulleys, thread the cord and fix the cleatClip a pulley into each ceiling hook, then thread the lift cord down through all four pulleys following the kit's diagram, finishing at a cleat fixed to the wall around 1.5m from the floor for easy reach. Fix the cleat with a wall plug rated for masonry, or a hollow-wall fixing if the wall is plasterboard on studs.

AB-07Test-lift before loading the bikePull the cord to raise and lower the empty hoist several times, checking each hook stays tight and the ceiling shows no movement or cracking around the fixings. Give each hook a firm hand tug - if the plasterboard flexes or a fixing creaks, stop and refit into solid timber or add a noggin before using it.
AB-08Hang the bike and set the heightHook the bike into the cradle straps by its wheels, then winch it up slowly and evenly on both sides, keeping the frame level as it rises. Lock the cord off at the cleat once the bike clears head height for anyone walking underneath.
AB-09Tidy upCoil and tie off any spare cord well out of reach of children. Sweep up drilling dust, plaster debris and any dropped fixings, and wipe down surfaces. Put ladders or steps away once the area is clear.
