Hang a plant from a concrete ceiling

Fit a secure fixing into a solid concrete ceiling, then hang your plant safely overhead.

PH-01Check the ceiling and plan your fixing pointDecide where you want the plant to hang and check there's enough headroom below it. Tap along the ceiling near your chosen spot — solid concrete sounds dense and consistent everywhere, with no hollow patches. If you hear a hollow sound or find timber joists or metal channels instead, this isn't a solid concrete ceiling and needs a different fixing method, so stop and check before drilling. Mark your exact fixing point with a pencil.

PH-02Get set up and protect the floorLay a dust sheet under the work area, since concrete dust falls straight down when you drill overhead. Set up steps or a small platform so you can reach the ceiling comfortably without stretching. Gather your drill, bit, plug, screw eye and detector before you climb up.

PH-03Check for cables and pipes, and set up your safety netScan the exact fixing point with a cable and pipe detector, but remember detectors can miss cables that are deep, run in metal conduit, or sit outside the normal safe zones — so still treat the ceiling as if something could be there. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all about what's behind the ceiling, isolate the lighting circuit at the consumer unit first.

PH-04Choose the right fixing for the weightWeigh your plant with its pot and wet soil — a medium houseplant in a 250mm pot can easily be 5-8kg once watered. Choose an anchor rated for at least double that weight overhead, since ceiling fixings take more strain than wall fixings. A sleeve anchor eye bolt (M6 or M8) or a heavy-duty ceiling-rated plastic plug with a screw eye both work well in solid concrete.

PH-05Drill the pilot holeFit a masonry bit matching your plug size (usually 6mm or 8mm) into an SDS drill — concrete needs the hammer action to cut cleanly. Wear safety glasses, since dust and grit fall as you drill overhead. Drill straight up to the depth stated on the plug packet, typically 40-50mm, keeping the drill level and steady.

PH-06Fit the anchor and eye fixingBlow or vacuum the dust out of the hole so the plug seats properly. Push the plug in until it sits flush with the ceiling. Screw the eye bolt or screw eye in by hand, then use a screwdriver through the eye to tighten it fully so it's snug against the concrete.

PH-07Test the fixing before you trust itHang a bag of similar weight to your plant, or pull down firmly on the eye with your hand, and check for any give, crumbling or movement. If the fixing feels loose or the plug spins, remove it, fill the hole, and re-drill slightly to one side with a fresh plug.

PH-08Hang the plant and adjust the heightClip an S-hook into the eye fixing, then attach your chain or macrame hanger. Adjust the length so the pot sits at the height you want and clears any furniture or head height below. Give it a final gentle wobble test once the plant is hanging.

PH-09Clean upVacuum the dust sheet and floor to clear concrete dust, and wipe down any surfaces nearby. Fold the dust sheet away and put tools back in their place. Check the fixing again after a day or two, once the plant has settled into its new spot.
