Fit a projector mount to a concrete ceiling

Work out what your ceiling is really made of, then fit a projector mount securely and safely, whatever's up there.

PM-01Check the mount and plan the jobCheck the projector mount's maximum load rating against your projector's actual weight, including any extension arm. Work out roughly where the mount needs to go using the projector's throw distance (check the manual or an online throw calculator for your screen size). Lay out a dust sheet below and get your stepladder set up on firm, level ground.

PM-02Work out what your ceiling actually isTap the ceiling: a dull, solid thud usually means concrete; a hollow, drum-like sound means plasterboard on joists or metal channels behind it. Run a detector along the marked area to find joist or channel spacing, and drill a small 3mm pilot hole at your fixing point. Fine pale dust means timber joist, grey grit and no give means solid concrete, and shiny metal swarf means a metal channel. Lath and plaster ceilings (common in houses built before about 1930) feel slightly springy and the plaster can crumble around the hole.

PM-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a ceiling, not just in tidy lines. Use your detector, but still assume something could be there and drill carefully anyway — detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, and anything behind metal-backed plasterboard, and a metal ceiling channel confuses cheap detectors further. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you ever hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
PM-04Mark the fixing centresHold the bracket's baseplate up at your planned position and use a spirit level to get it square to the screen wall. Mark each fixing hole through the template with a pencil. Check the marks avoid any cable, pipe, or ceiling joint you found in the previous steps.

PM-05Fixing into a solid concrete ceilingDrill with an SDS drill and an 8mm masonry bit to a depth of 60mm. Blow out the dust, tap in an 8mm wall plug rated for the mount's weight, then drive in the supplied M8 screw or bolt through the baseplate. Repeat for each fixing hole, checking the baseplate stays level as you go.

PM-06Fixing into plasterboard on timber joistsConfirm you're centred on the joist, not just the plasterboard, using the pilot hole test from earlier. Drill a 4mm pilot hole into the centre of the joist, then drive a 50mm wood screw through the baseplate straight into the timber. Never fix a projector mount into plasterboard alone — it will pull straight through under load.

PM-07Fixing into plasterboard on metal ceiling channelsMetal ceiling channels (often called resilient bars or furring channels) are usually thin 0.5mm steel. They will not hold a projector mount safely on their own, especially with an extended arm pulling on the fixing. Screw a timber batten across two or three channels using self-drilling metal-stud screws, then fix the mount into the centre of that batten with wood screws, or fix a longer bolt up through the channel into the solid joist or concrete slab above it. Never use an ordinary wood screw or plastic wall plug in a metal channel — it strips straight through.

PM-08Fixing into a lath-and-plaster ceilingOld lime plaster on timber laths crumbles easily and cannot take any load on its own. Locate the ceiling joist above the laths with your detector, then drill through the plaster and lath and into the joist. Drive a 70mm wood screw through the baseplate into solid joist timber, and expect to patch the plaster gap around the hole afterwards with a little filler.

PM-09Fit the arm and level the mountAttach the extension arm to the baseplate and adjust it to the throw distance you worked out earlier. Tighten all bolts to the torque given in the mount's instructions — don't overtighten into plasterboard or you'll crush the board. Check level again with the spirit level before fitting the projector.

PM-10Run the power and HDMI cableRoute the cable to your nearest existing socket using surface cable trunking clipped or stuck along the ceiling and down the wall — this avoids any electrical work. Do not cut in a new socket or extend fixed wiring yourself to power the projector; that's notifiable electrical work.

KNOW THE RULES

Adding a new socket or altering fixed household wiring is notifiable work under Building Regulations Part P. Use a registered electrician, or run the cable to an existing socket with surface trunking instead.

PM-11Fit the projector, test and tidy upBolt the projector onto the mount plate using the fixings supplied with the projector. Connect the power and HDMI leads, switch on, and check the image is square and focused on the screen. Wipe down the area, vacuum up any plaster or masonry dust, and fold away your dust sheet.
