Hang a replacement radiator on a timber stud wall

Take down your old radiator, choose the right wall fixings, then safely hang and reconnect a new one in an afternoon.

RD-01Plan the job and gather your toolsCheck the new radiator's bracket spacing and weight before you buy fixings — a full double radiator can weigh 20-30kg with water in it. Lay old towels or dust sheets under the work area, and have a bucket, bleed key and adjustable spanner ready for draining. Turn the central heating off and let the system cool fully before you start.

RD-02Drain and disconnect the old radiatorClose both valves (the TRV and the lockshield) by turning them fully clockwise. Put the bucket under the lockshield valve, loosen the cap nut, and let the radiator drain — top the bleed valve up if it stalls. Once empty, undo both valve connections fully and lift the radiator off its brackets.

RD-03Remove the old brackets and check the wallUnscrew and remove the old brackets. Check the wall behind for damage, damp staining, or old plugs left in place — pull these out and fill any holes you don't plan to reuse. Let any filler dry before you mark up new fixing points.

RD-04Mark and check the new bracket positionsHold the new brackets against the wall using the new radiator's spacing, and mark the fixing holes with a pencil. Use a spirit level to check the marks are level and at the same height — an out-of-level radiator looks wrong and can trap air. Before drilling, work out your wall type: tap along the wall for a hollow stud-wall sound versus a dead solid brick/block sound, and use a detector to trace the line of screw heads holding the plasterboard on.

RD-05Work out timber stud or metal studIf your wall is a stud wall, find out which before you fix anything heavy to it. Run a magnet or stud detector along the marked line of screws — if it grips or beeps steadily every 400-600mm, that's a stud. Drill a small 2mm pilot hole at your mark: fine pale dust means timber, and bright metallic swarf means a metal (steel) stud. Metal studs are common in flats, new builds, and anything refitted since the 1990s.

RD-06Drill and fit the brackets — safety firstCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones, so use a detector and still treat the wall as live until proven otherwise — detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, and anything behind metal-backed plasterboard, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely before you drill, so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit first. Fixing method depends on your wall: into solid brick or block, drill with a 10mm masonry bit to 45-50mm depth and use a red or brown wall plug with a 50-60mm screw; into a timber stud, drill a 2-3mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud and drive in a 50-60mm wood screw; into dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a fixing long enough to pass through the 40-50mm void and bite into the masonry behind, not just the board; into lath and plaster, locate the timber stud behind the laths and fix into that, going slowly so you don't crack the old plaster. A metal stud alone will not hold a radiator — the weight and the constant flex as it heats and cools will pull a plasterboard or hollow-wall fixing straight out. If you have metal studs, fit a timber noggin between the studs at bracket height before boarding, or fix the brackets through to solid masonry behind if there is any. Never use a plain plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw in a metal stud — it strips straight through 0.5mm steel.

RD-07Hang the new radiatorLift the radiator onto the fitted brackets, checking the valve tails line up with the pipework below. Check it sits level with a spirit level and doesn't rock — if one bracket feels loose, stop and refit it properly before going further.
RD-08Reconnect the valvesWrap PTFE tape clockwise around the valve tail threads, 8-10 turns. Reconnect the TRV and lockshield valve, tightening the cap nuts by hand first, then a quarter-turn with the spanner — don't overtighten, as this can crack the valve body.

RD-09Refill and bleed the systemOpen both valves fully and turn the heating back on. Once the radiator warms, bleed it with the key to release trapped air, holding a cloth underneath to catch drips, and close the valve as soon as water appears steadily.

RD-10Check for leaks and top up pressureCheck both valve connections and the bleed valve for drips once the radiator is fully hot. If your system uses a pressure gauge on the boiler, top it up to the manufacturer's recommended level if it's dropped after bleeding.
RD-11Tidy up and dispose of the old radiatorWipe down the new radiator and mop up any spilt water underneath. Take the old radiator to a household waste site for metal recycling rather than putting it in general rubbish — most councils won't collect it kerbside.
