Hang a replacement radiator on a metal stud wall

Take down your old radiator safely, work out what's behind the wall, fit a solid support, then hang and reconnect the new one.

RD-01Get ready and clear the areaTurn off the boiler and leave the system to cool for at least an hour before you start – hot water under pressure can scald. Lay dust sheets on the floor and pull carpet or flooring back from the wall. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut off the water fast if anything leaks later.

RD-02Isolate the radiator valvesClose the lockshield valve (the one under a small removable plastic cap) fully clockwise, counting and noting the number of turns. Close the valve on the other end – manual or thermostatic – the same way. This traps the water in the radiator so the rest of the system stays full while you work.

RD-03Drain and remove the old radiatorPut the bowl under the lower valve, loosen the drain point or valve nut slightly, and let the water run out until the radiator is empty. Undo the nuts connecting both valves to the radiator with an adjustable spanner, then lift it off its wall brackets. A full-size radiator is heavy and awkward – get a second person to help.

RD-04Take down the old brackets and check the wallUnscrew the old brackets and look at what comes out: a plastic plug and screw usually means masonry or dot-and-dab, a bare wood screw with no plug means a timber stud, and a metal toggle or self-drilling screw means a steel stud track. Run a detector or a magnet along the wall tracking the line of old screw heads, and tap either side of the marks to compare a solid sound against a hollow drum. A quick pilot hole in a hidden spot helps too – fine wood dust means timber, bright metal swarf means a steel track, and dust with nothing solid behind it for 60-70mm suggests dot-and-dab.

RD-05Choose the right fixing for masonry, timber stud, dot-and-dab or lath and plasterSolid brick or block takes an 8mm plastic plug with a 40-50mm screw for a radiator bracket. Plasterboard on timber studs needs a wood screw driven into the centre of the stud itself, not just the board. Dot-and-dab has an air gap behind the plasterboard, so fixings need to be long enough – usually 75-90mm – to pass through the board and dab and bite into the masonry behind. Lath and plaster is fragile and won't take a radiator's weight alone; find a timber upright behind it or fit a noggin, and fix into that instead.

RD-06Fit a proper fixing point for a metal stud wallA radiator is too heavy for a plasterboard toggle or a screw into bare 0.5mm steel – it will pull straight through over time. Cut a small inspection hole in the plasterboard, fix a timber noggin (about 44x22mm) across the studs using self-drilling metal-stud screws, then patch the board with an offcut and scrim tape before fitting brackets into the timber. If the metal stud wall is dry-lined over solid masonry, which is common in flats, it can be easier to use fixings long enough to pass through the board and steel track and bite into the masonry instead.

RD-07Mark and level the new bracket positionsHold the new radiator or its brackets against the wall at the height you want, and use a spirit level to mark a true horizontal line – a sloped radiator is obvious once it's up. Measure the bracket spacing off the radiator itself and transfer the marks onto your line, checking them against the noggin, stud or masonry position you identified earlier.

RD-08Drill the fixing holesCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further – use a detector, but still treat every hole as live until you've checked twice. Confirm your stopcock turns off cleanly before you drill, and if you have any doubt at all, isolate the electrics at the consumer unit and shut off the water at the stopcock first. Drill each marked point with a bit matched to your fixing – typically 8mm for masonry plugs – and stop the instant you feel a sudden change in resistance.

RD-09Fit the brackets and hang the radiatorScrew the brackets into your marked points, checking each one is tight and doesn't spin in its fixing before you trust it. Lift the radiator onto the brackets – get help for anything above a small radiator – and check with a spirit level that it sits level and flush to the wall.
RD-10Reconnect the valvesWrap PTFE tape clockwise around the valve tail threads, then reconnect both valves to the radiator by hand before finishing with an adjustable spanner – don't overtighten, as this can crack the fitting. Set the lockshield valve back to the same number of turns you noted when you removed the old radiator, so the system stays balanced.

RD-11Refill the system and bleed the radiatorOpen both valves slowly, then top up the boiler pressure using the filling loop if you have a combi boiler, following its instructions. Bleed the radiator with a bleed key, holding a cloth under the valve, and close it the moment water runs out with no more air hissing.

RD-12Check for leaks and tidy upRun the heating for 20-30 minutes and check every joint, valve and new fixing for damp patches or drips, tightening gently if needed. Wipe down the radiator and wall, remove the dust sheets, and vacuum up any drilling or plasterboard dust.
