Hang a wall clock on a timber stud wall

Learn to identify your wall type safely, then fix and hang a wall clock securely in one session.

HC-01Choose a spot and gather your toolsPick a spot at comfortable eye level, away from direct sun and radiators, which can affect the clock's mechanism over time. Hold the clock up and mark the fixing point lightly in pencil. Lay out your tools: drill, pilot/masonry bit as needed, screwdriver, spirit level, pencil, and a cable/pipe detector.

HC-02Work out what your wall is made ofRun a stud detector or magnet across the marked area to find a line of screw heads, which shows a stud's centre. Tap the wall: a dull, solid thud usually means brick or block, while a hollow drum sound means plasterboard on studs. A soft, slightly bouncy feel with a hollow sound often means lath and plaster, common in houses built before the 1930s. If the wall sounds hollow but feels solid a little way in when you press it, it is probably dot-and-dab plasterboard with masonry behind an air gap. Drill a small 2mm test hole at your mark: pale wood dust means a timber stud, fine grey metallic filings mean a metal stud, and dense red or orange dust means brick or block.

HC-03Check for hidden cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the 'safe zones'. Use your detector, but still treat the area as if something could be there, even after a clear reading, because detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or masked by a metal stud frame. Before drilling, find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit first.
HC-04Fit the right fixing for your wall typeTimber stud: drill a 4mm pilot hole 30mm deep in the centre of the stud, then drive in a 40mm wood screw directly, no plug needed. Metal stud: never use a plain plastic wall plug or wood screw, as it strips straight through 0.5mm steel; use a self-drilling metal-stud screw into the stud itself, or a small spring toggle rated for the clock's weight if fixing into the plasterboard between studs. Solid brick or block: drill a 6mm hole 40mm deep with a masonry bit, tap in a matching wall plug, then drive a 40mm screw. Dot-and-dab plasterboard: use a fixing long enough to pass through the plasterboard and the air gap into the masonry behind, typically 60-75mm total, or a rated plasterboard fixing if you cannot reach the masonry. Lath and plaster: avoid fixing into the laths alone, as they can crack; find a timber upright with your detector where possible, or use a specialist lath-and-plaster spring toggle that spans the laths, drilling gently with masking tape over the mark to stop the plaster chipping.

HC-05Hang the clock and check it's levelScrew in the fixing until roughly 5-8mm is left protruding, enough for the clock's hanging bracket to slip over securely. Lift the clock onto the screw or hook and let it settle. Hold your spirit level across the top or bottom edge and adjust slightly if needed, then step back to check it looks straight from across the room.
HC-06Tidy up and finishVacuum or brush away any dust from drilling, especially plaster or masonry dust on the floor and skirting. Wipe the wall gently if any marks remain, and remove your pencil mark. Set the clock's time and check it's ticking, then dispose of any packaging.
