WC-03Check for cables, pipes, and your isolation points before drillingCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones, and cheap detectors can miss deep cables, armoured cable, or anything behind metal-backed plasterboard or a metal stud frame. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and don't rely on the detector alone — treat every hole as if something could be behind it.
