TF-03Check for pipes and cables before you screw downPipes and cables can run under a timber floor in places you wouldn't expect, especially near sockets, radiators and stairs. Use a cable and pipe detector along your screw lines, but treat it as a guide, not a guarantee, since deep or metal-clad services can hide from cheap detectors. Before you start, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling near known cable runs.
