Mount a soundbar bracket on a timber stud wall

Fit a soundbar bracket securely to your living room wall, checking carefully what's behind it before you drill.

AB-01Gather your tools and check the bracketUnpack the soundbar bracket and check it comes with fixings — often these are the wrong type for your wall, so put them aside. You'll need a detector, a spirit level, a tape measure, a pencil, a drill with pilot and clearance bits, and a screwdriver. Lay everything out so you're not hunting for things mid-job.

AB-02Work out what your wall is made ofTap the wall along the height you want the bracket. A dull, solid sound means brick, block, or dot-and-dab over masonry. A hollow sound means a stud wall or lath and plaster. Run a detector or a magnet sideways at that height — a line of screw heads roughly 400mm or 600mm apart means studs; if the magnet grips almost anywhere, you likely have metal-backed plasterboard or a metal stud frame, which also confuses cheap detectors. If you find a stud, drill a 2mm test hole in an inconspicuous spot: pale wood dust means timber, fine grey swarf means metal. Lath and plaster feels slightly springy and often has a rougher, wavier surface than modern plasterboard.
AB-03Mark and level the bracket positionHold the bracket at your chosen height — usually just below the TV, or centred under it — and mark the top screw holes with a pencil. Use the spirit level across the marks before drilling anything; a bracket even 5mm out of level looks wrong once the soundbar is on it. Double-check the spacing matches your soundbar's mounting points, not just the bracket's default holes.

AB-04Fix into a timber stud wallBefore you drill anything, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. Cables and pipes can run almost anywhere behind a wall, not just in the usual safe zones, so even after using a detector, drill slowly and stop at the first sign of resistance, smoke, or a burning smell. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit first. For a timber stud, drill a 3mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud, then drive a 4mm x 50mm wood screw through the bracket into the pilot hole. Repeat for each fixing point, checking the bracket stays level as you go.

AB-05Fix into a metal stud wall (if that's what you have)Never use a plain wall plug or an ordinary wood screw on a metal stud — it strips straight through 0.5mm steel. Use a self-drilling metal-stud screw if fixing directly into the stud, or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the bracket's weight if fixing into the plasterboard between studs. A soundbar bracket is light, but if the soundbar hangs forward or gets knocked, a metal stud alone may not hold long-term — if you can, fit a timber noggin between the studs first, or fix through to solid masonry behind if there is any.

AB-06Fix into solid brick or block (if that's what you have)Drill a 6mm hole to a depth of 40mm using a masonry bit, then push in a matching 6mm wall plug. Drive a 4mm x 40mm screw into the plug through the bracket. Clear the hole of dust first with a quick blow or a vacuum nozzle so the plug seats properly.

AB-07Fix into dot-and-dab plasterboard (if that's what you have)Behind dot-and-dab plasterboard there's a gap of roughly 10-40mm before you reach the solid masonry, so a standard fixing won't bite properly. Use a long fixing — typically 70-90mm — designed to pass through the void and anchor into the masonry behind, such as a heavy-duty frame fixing. Drill through at the marked depth, checking the fixing seats firmly against solid material, not just plasterboard.

AB-08Fix into lath and plaster (if that's what you have)Lath and plaster is thin timber strips under old, brittle plaster, so it cracks easily if you drill carelessly. Find the timber studs or the laths themselves with your detector or the tap test, then drill a small pilot hole slowly to avoid shattering the plaster around it. Use a longer screw, around 40-50mm, so it passes through the plaster and lath into solid timber behind rather than just gripping crumbly plaster.

AB-09Check the bracket is secureOnce all fixings are in, give the bracket a firm tug and try to rock it side to side. It should not move or creak. Re-check it's level with your spirit level before loading it with the soundbar.
AB-10Attach the soundbar and route the cableClip or screw the soundbar onto the bracket according to its own fitting instructions. Route the power and any HDMI or optical cable neatly down the wall, using cable clips if you want a tidy finish, and leave enough slack that the soundbar isn't under tension.

AB-11Tidy upVacuum up any dust or debris from drilling, especially plaster dust from lath and plaster or dot-and-dab work. Wipe down the wall and skirting below the bracket. Put spare fixings and offcuts somewhere you'll find them later.
