Mount a soundbar bracket on a solid brick or block wall

Plan the position, fix a secure bracket, then attach and cable-tidy your soundbar in one straightforward session.

SB-01Clear the area and gather your toolsMove furniture away from the wall and lay a dust sheet on the floor. Get everything together before you start: drill, masonry bit, spirit level, pencil, tape measure and the bracket's own fixings and screws. Check the bracket comes with a paper or card template — it saves a lot of measuring.

SB-02Confirm the wall is solid brick or blockTap the wall — solid masonry sounds dull and dense all over, not hollow. A pilot hole should bring out grey or red masonry dust, not timber shavings or steel swarf. If you get a hollow sound or dust that doesn't match, stop — this guide is for solid brick or block only, and a stud wall needs different fixings.

SB-03Mark the bracket positionHold the bracket or its template against the wall at your chosen height, usually just below or level with the TV screen. Use a spirit level to get it dead level, then mark the fixing holes with a pencil. Double-check the height by eye from where you'll actually sit — it's easy to mount things too high.

SB-04Check for cables and pipes before you drillRun a detector over the marked area, but don't trust it completely — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or outside the usual safe zones near sockets and switches. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt about what's behind the wall, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before you drill.

SB-05Drill the pilot holesFit a masonry bit matching the size stated on your wall plug packet — typically 6mm or 8mm for a soundbar bracket. Drill straight and level to the depth of the plug plus 5mm, using a depth stop or tape marker on the bit. Stop drilling immediately and check for damp, dust colour changes or resistance that suggests a service — if anything feels wrong, stop and investigate before continuing.

SB-06Insert wall plugsPush a suitable masonry wall plug into each hole until it's flush with the wall surface. Tap it gently with a hammer if it's tight, but don't force it — it should sit snugly, not crush the hole.

SB-07Fix the bracket to the wallLine the bracket up with the plugged holes and drive the screws in with a screwdriver or drill on a low torque setting. Don't overtighten — stop once the bracket is firm and can't be wiggled by hand. Recheck the level once all screws are in.

SB-08Attach the soundbar and tidy the cablesClip or screw the soundbar onto the bracket following the manufacturer's instructions. Run the power and audio cables down the wall using cable clips or a slim trunking channel, keeping them away from the drilled holes. Check the soundbar sits level and doesn't rock on the bracket.

SB-09Clear up and do a final checkVacuum up masonry dust from the floor and wipe down the wall. Give the bracket a firm test push to confirm it's solid, then power on the soundbar to check everything works.
