Mount a Wi-Fi router or mesh unit on a metal stud wall

Choose the right fixing for your wall type, then mount your Wi-Fi router or mesh unit securely and safely.

RTR-01Plan where the unit will goPick a spot central to where you use Wi-Fi most, away from thick walls, mirrors and metal pipes, which all weaken the signal. Check there's a power socket nearby, and if you're wiring in an internet cable, check it can reach the router point. Hold the unit up at the height you want and stand back to check it looks right before you mark anything.

RTR-02Work out what your wall is made ofRun a stud detector or a small magnet across the wall. A magnet that clicks onto a regular line of screw heads roughly 400-600mm apart means plasterboard on studs. Tap the wall — a hollow, drum-like sound between fixing points usually means studs or dot-and-dab, while a dead, solid sound means brick or block behind. If you're still unsure, drill a small 2-3mm pilot hole: fine white dust means plasterboard or plaster, hard resistance with brick-red or grey dust means masonry, and shiny metal swarf means you've hit a metal stud.

RTR-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones near sockets and switches. Use a detector, but still assume something could be hidden — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or outside the normal zones, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
RTR-04Mark and drill the fixing holes for your wall typeHow you fix depends on what's behind the surface. Solid brick or block: drill a 6mm hole 40mm deep with a masonry bit, fit a wall plug, and use a 40mm woodscrew. Plasterboard on timber studs: pilot-drill to confirm timber dust, then drive a 35mm woodscrew straight into the centre of the stud — no plug needed. Plasterboard on metal studs: confirm fine steel swarf from the pilot hole, then use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing rated for at least 5kg — never a plain wall plug or ordinary wood screw, which will strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Dot-and-dab plasterboard: use a fixing long enough (typically 50-65mm) to pass through the board and adhesive dabs and bite into the masonry behind. Lath and plaster: find a solid timber batten behind the laths with your detector and use a fine screw driven into that timber, avoiding gaps between laths, which will crumble under load. A router or mesh unit is light, usually under 500g, so a single 5kg-rated fixing is enough for any of these walls — you don't need a noggin or pattress for this job, unlike heavier gear such as shelves or TV arms.

RTR-05Fit the bracket or mounting plateHold the mounting plate or bracket against the wall, level it with a spirit level, and mark through the fixing holes. Drill and fix as set out for your wall type, then screw the bracket firmly to the wall. Give it a firm tug once fitted to check it doesn't move or flex.

RTR-06Attach the router and dress the cablesClip or slot the router or mesh unit onto the bracket, following the manufacturer's fitting method. Route the power and any ethernet cable neatly down the wall, using cable clips every 200-300mm so nothing hangs loose or gets snagged. Keep cables away from radiators and direct sunlight.

RTR-07Test the signal and tidy upPower the unit on and check it connects properly, then walk around your home checking signal strength in the rooms that matter most. Vacuum up any dust or debris from drilling and wipe down the wall. Dispose of any offcuts or packaging.
