Mount a Wi-Fi router or mesh unit on a timber stud wall

Fix a lightweight Wi-Fi router bracket safely to any wall, checking what's behind it before you drill.

RT-01Choose the spot and gather your toolsPick a wall near a power socket and, ideally, central to where you need signal. Keep the router away from metal objects, mirrors and thick walls, as these block Wi-Fi. Gather a drill, screwdriver, pencil, spirit level, stud/cable detector, and the bracket that came with your router or a universal mesh-unit mount.

RT-02Work out what the wall is made ofTap the wall. A dull, solid sound usually means brick or block; a hollow sound means a stud wall or dot-and-dab plasterboard. Run a detector or a small magnet slowly across the area — a line of screw heads roughly every 400-600mm means plasterboard on studs. Drill a 3mm pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot: pale wood dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means a metal stud, and dust with no resistance behind 10-15mm of plasterboard means dot-and-dab. Older solid ceilings and walls with a slightly springy, crumbly feel are often lath and plaster.
RT-03Check for cables and pipes, and know how to shut things offCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the 'safe zones'. Use your detector, but still treat the wall as if something is there until you have drilled a shallow test hole and seen otherwise — detectors miss deep cables, armoured cable, and anything behind metal-backed board or a metal stud frame. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling.
RT-04Mark and drill your fixing holesHold the bracket level and mark the fixing centres with a pencil. Into a timber stud, drill a 3mm pilot hole 30-35mm deep in the centre of the stud. Into a metal stud, drill a small pilot hole only if using a self-drilling fixing; most self-drilling metal-stud anchors need no pre-drilling at all. Into plasterboard between studs, dot-and-dab, or lath and plaster, drill a hole sized to your toggle or hollow-wall fixing (check its packet, typically 6-10mm). Into solid brick or block, drill 6mm holes 40mm deep using a masonry bit and hammer action.

RT-05Fit the right fixings for your wallTimber stud: use a 35-40mm wood screw straight into the pilot hole, driven into the centre of the stud. Metal stud: use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or a spring/toggle fixing rated for hollow metal-frame walls — never a plastic wall plug and never a plain wood screw, as these strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Plasterboard between studs, dot-and-dab or lath and plaster: use a nylon or spring toggle rated for at least 5kg; for dot-and-dab, choose a fixing long enough (50-60mm) to pass through the board and the dab gap and grip the masonry behind if the toggle alone feels loose. Solid brick or block: insert a wall plug and drive in a 35mm screw until snug, not overtightened.

RT-06Mount the router and tidy the cablesClip the router or mesh unit onto its bracket and check it sits level. Route the power and any Ethernet cable down the wall using cable clips every 200-300mm, keeping cables away from radiators and out of reach of curious hands or pets. Leave a little slack at the router end so you can unclip it for resets without straining the cable.

RT-07Test the signal and clear upPower the router on and confirm it connects and gets a strong signal in the rooms you need. Give the bracket a firm tug to check it holds before you trust it fully. Vacuum up any dust or debris from drilling and dispose of it safely.
