Mount a Wi-Fi router or mesh unit on a lath and plaster wall

Mount a lightweight Wi-Fi router or mesh unit on your wall safely, without cracking old plaster or hitting hidden cables.

RT-01Plan the job and gather your toolsPick a spot close to a socket and within reach of your Wi-Fi signal, away from metal pipework, foil-backed insulation or mirrors that can block signal. Check the router or mesh unit's bracket or keyhole slots to see how far apart the fixing holes need to be. Lay a dust sheet below the work area and set your tools out before you start.

RT-02Work out what's really behind the plasterLath and plaster is usually thin timber laths nailed to timber studs or battens, sometimes over masonry. Run a detector over the area, then tap along the wall — an even, hollow sound spaced roughly 300-400mm apart points to timber uprights or battens behind the plaster. A magnet or detector that clicks along a straight line instead suggests you're actually on plasterboard over metal studs, not true lath and plaster, so check before you commit to a fixing method. A dull, solid sound with no give at all means masonry close behind, with little or no cavity.

RT-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the 'safe zones' — a detector helps but can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed plasterboard, so still treat the wall as live until you prove otherwise. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns before you drill. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and be ready to shut off the water at the stopcock straight away if you hit a pipe.
RT-04Choose the right fixing for your wallIf you found a timber upright or batten, mark its centre, drill a 2-3mm pilot hole, and drive a 40-50mm wood screw straight into the timber — this is the strongest fixing for lath and plaster and avoids stressing the brittle plaster. If there's no timber where you need to fix, use a spring or gravity toggle rated for lath and plaster or old ceilings, not a standard plasterboard fixing, and only for something as light as a router. On solid brick or block, drill 6mm and use a wall plug with a matching screw, 40-50mm deep. On dot-and-dab plasterboard, use a fixing long enough (usually 60-75mm) to pass through the board and dab gap and bite into the masonry behind — a normal wall plug won't reach. On plasterboard over TIMBER studs, screw straight into the centre of the stud. On plasterboard over METAL studs, use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing or toggle made for steel — never a plastic wall plug or ordinary wood screw, which strips straight through 0.5mm steel and won't hold, especially with a stiff cable pulling on it.

RT-05Mark, drill and fit the fixingsHold the bracket or wall plate against the wall, level it with your spirit level, and mark the hole centres through it with a pencil. Drill each hole to the size and depth needed for the fixing you chose in the last step, keeping the drill steady and square to avoid cracking the plaster. Push in plugs or toggles as needed, then drive the screws in, leaving 3-5mm protruding if the bracket hooks over the screw heads.
RT-06Fix the bracket or wall plateFit the router's bracket or wall plate onto the screws or fixings, checking it sits flat and level. Give it a firm tug by hand before you trust it with the router — it should not move or flex.
RT-07Route and dress the cablesRun the power cable, and the ethernet cable if it's a mesh unit, down to the socket or existing cabling point, keeping a gentle curve rather than a sharp bend. Secure the cable every 150-200mm with self-adhesive cable clips so it doesn't hang loose or get trapped under the bracket. Leave a little slack near the unit so it isn't under tension.

RT-08Mount the unit and check the signalClip or lock the router or mesh unit onto the bracket and plug it in. Check the Wi-Fi signal from a phone in a couple of nearby rooms before you finish up. If the signal is weak, it's easier to move the unit now than after you've filled and touched up the wall.
RT-09Tidy upVacuum any plaster dust from the floor and skirting, and wipe the wall down. If you drilled a test hole you didn't use, fill it with a dab of plaster filler and leave it to dry. Dispose of packaging and put your tools away.
