Put up a pegboard on a metal stud wall

Mount a pegboard securely on any wall type, using the right fixing so it holds real tools and weight.

PB-01Plan the position and check your wall typeChoose a height you can reach without stretching, and avoid positioning the pegboard over sockets, switches or a radiator. Run a stud detector or magnet across the wall in a horizontal line: a steady pattern every 400-600mm means timber or metal studs, no pattern usually means solid masonry or dot-and-dab plasterboard. Tap the wall too — a dull solid sound is brick or block, a hollow drum sound is stud or dot-and-dab. A small 3mm pilot hole tells you more: pale dust is timber, grey dust is masonry or plaster, silvery swarf is a metal stud track.

PB-02Mark the fixing pointsHold the pegboard against the wall at your chosen height and use a spirit level across the top edge to get it dead level. Mark the wall lightly through the corner fixing holes with a pencil, then take the board down. If it has more than four fixing points, mark those too — most pegboards need a fixing every 300-400mm to stop sagging once loaded.

PB-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones, so run your detector across every mark first. Still treat the wall as if something is there even after a clear reading — detectors miss deep cables, cables in metal conduit, anything behind metal-backed plasterboard, and readings get unreliable near a metal stud frame. Before drilling, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
PB-04Fixing into solid brick or blockDrill straight through each mark using a 6mm masonry bit to a depth of 45-50mm. Push in a 6mm wall plug until flush, then drive a 40-50mm screw through the pegboard's spacer and into the plug, leaving the spacer holding the board slightly off the wall. Repeat at every marked point, checking level as you go.

PB-05Fixing into timber studsDrill a 3mm pilot hole into the centre of each stud mark to stop the screw splitting the wood. Drive a 50mm wood screw through the pegboard's spacer straight into the pilot hole — this is one of the strongest fixings you can get for a pegboard. Where a fixing point falls between studs, use a plasterboard toggle rated for at least 10kg rather than skipping it.

PB-06Fixing into metal studsA metal stud track won't hold a loaded pegboard on its own — it's only 0.5mm steel, and pegboard hooks pull outward as you use them, which works fixings loose over time. Where a mark falls on the track, use a self-drilling metal-stud anchor or a toggle-style hollow-wall fixing rated for the load — never a plain plastic plug or an ordinary wood screw, which will strip straight through. For a busy pegboard, fit a plywood pattress (about 400x600x18mm) across two studs behind the board first, screwed to both studs with 40mm self-tapping screws, then fix the pegboard into the ply. This spreads the load properly instead of relying on the thin steel alone.

PB-07Fixing into dot-and-dab plasterboardOn dot-and-dab walls the plasterboard sits on adhesive blobs with air gaps behind it, so a normal wall plug has nothing solid to grip. Use a long fixing — a 75mm hammer-fix or frame fixing — that passes through the plasterboard and the air gap and grips the masonry behind. Drill straight in to the depth shown on the fixing's packet, usually 60-75mm, then drive it home so the pegboard sits tight to the plasterboard, not to the masonry.

PB-08Fixing into lath and plasterLath and plaster is old, brittle plaster on thin timber strips, and it crumbles easily around ordinary plugs. Use a spring toggle or a long spiral-type plasterboard fixing rated for the load, pushed through a pilot hole large enough for the toggle to pass through and open out behind the laths. Use light, steady pressure rather than heavy hammering, to stop the plaster cracking around the hole.

PB-09Hang the pegboard and check it's secureLift the pegboard onto the top fixings first, then swing it down onto the lower ones and tighten every screw evenly — not so tight that you crush the board or crack the wall surface. Check it's level and give each corner a firm push to test for movement. If any fixing feels loose or spins freely, remove it and refit with a bigger toggle or a longer fixing rather than leaving it half-secure.

PB-10Add hooks and load it graduallyFit the pegboard hooks and accessories, then load the board up gradually over the first few uses rather than hanging everything at once — this matters most on a metal stud fixing. Keep heavy or awkward items, like a full tool bag or a long-handled tool that levers as it's lifted off, near a stud or pattress point rather than mid-panel.

PB-11Clear upVacuum up drilled dust and any plaster or masonry debris — lath and plaster work can be especially messy. Wipe down the wall and check the floor and skirting for scratches or dust marks. Keep any spare fixings in a labelled bag in case you need to adjust the board later.
