Put up a pegboard on a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Learn to plan, mark and safely fix a pegboard to your wall, checking what's behind it and using the right fixing.

PB-01Plan the layout and gather your toolsDecide where the pegboard will go and check it clears any nearby socket, radiator or door swing. Hold the board against the wall at the height you want and mark the top corners lightly in pencil. You'll need this board hung slightly off the wall so hooks can slot in behind it, so pick up spacers now rather than partway through.

PB-02Work out exactly what wall you haveDon't assume — check, because the fixing is different for every wall type. Knock across the marked area: a hollow, slightly springy sound with a bit of give means dot-and-dab or a stud wall, and a dead, solid knock everywhere means solid brick or block. Drill a small 2-3mm pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot and look at the dust: fine white powder is plasterboard or old plaster, gritty red or grey dust is brick or block, pale shavings are timber, and shiny metal swarf means a metal stud. On stud walls, run a magnet or detector along the surface — regular clicks every 400-600mm mark stud centres, and a magnet sticking well away from any joint line means metal studs.

PB-03Mark and level your fixing pointsHold the pegboard up and use a spirit level to draw a level line for the top edge. Mark the fixing positions through the board's existing holes, or measure them off and transfer to the wall with a pencil. Use one fixing near each corner as a minimum, and add a centre fixing on a board over about 900mm wide.
PB-04Check what's behind the wall before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the usual safe zones, so treat the wall as live until you've proven otherwise. Sweep a cable and pipe detector slowly over every marked fixing point in both directions — on a dot-and-dab or metal-stud wall the metal dabs, foil-backed board or steel frame can confuse a cheap detector, so still drill cautiously even if it reads clear. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before you drill.

PB-05Drill and fix — dot-and-dab plasterboardThe plasterboard here sits on blobs of adhesive with an air gap of roughly 10-40mm behind it before you reach solid block, so an ordinary wall plug has nothing to grip. Use a long fixing designed to bridge this gap — a frame fixing or hollow-wall fixing with a sleeve, around 100-120mm long, so it passes through the board, crosses the void, and locks into the masonry behind. Drill through at a steady speed with a 6mm masonry bit, checking the drill doesn't suddenly plunge further than expected — that's the air gap, not a fault. For a heavily loaded pegboard, screw a thin timber batten through to the blockwork first and hang the board on the batten instead.

PB-06Drill and fix — solid brick or blockDrill straight into the marked point with a 6mm masonry bit, to a depth about 5mm deeper than your wall plug. Push in a wall plug until it's flush, then drive the screw through the pegboard's spacer and into the plug. Check each fixing is tight before moving to the next.

PB-07Drill and fix — plasterboard on timber studsDrill a 2mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud at each marked point, to stop the wood splitting. Drive a wood screw through the pegboard's spacer, through the plasterboard, and straight into the stud — never off to one side, where it will only grip skimmed plaster. A 4x50mm screw usually gives enough bite through the board and spacer into solid timber.

PB-08Drill and fix — plasterboard on metal studsNever use a plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw here — they strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Where a fixing point lands on a metal stud, use a self-drilling metal-stud screw; where it lands on the plasterboard between studs, use a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the pegboard's loaded weight. A pegboard loaded with heavy tools pulls forward as items are lifted off, which a metal stud alone won't cope with — fit a timber noggin between the studs first, or fix through to any masonry behind, if the board will carry serious weight.

PB-09Drill and fix — lath and plasterThis old plaster is brittle and keyed onto thin timber laths, so drill on a slow speed with no hammer action to avoid cracking it. Where you can locate a solid timber lath or the stud behind, drive a screw straight into it; where you land between laths, use a spring toggle long enough to open out fully behind the plaster. Never rely on the plaster alone to hold weight — it will eventually crumble.

PB-10Hang the pegboard and check it's secureLift the pegboard onto the fitted screws or partially-driven fixings, then tighten fully once it's level and sitting evenly on its spacers. Give the board a firm push and pull by hand to check every fixing holds before you load it. Adjust with the spirit level if one corner sits proud of the others.
PB-11Fit hooks and tidy upSlot the pegboard hooks into the holes and check they sit in the gap behind the board without fouling the wall. Sweep or vacuum up any dust and offcuts, and wipe down the wall below the fixing points. Keep any spare fixings and the packaging in case you need to add more hooks later.
