Put up a plate rack on a metal stud wall

Fit a plate rack on a metal stud kitchen wall, using the right fixings so it holds securely without damaging the plasterboard.

PR-01Plan where the rack goesDecide on a height that clears the worktop and any taps or sockets below. Hold the rack against the wall and mark the top edge with a pencil, then check it's level. Clear the worktop underneath and lay down a dust sheet before you start drilling.

PR-02Find out what's behind the wall, and check for cables and pipesRun a stud detector across the marked area, or trace the line of screw heads holding the plasterboard on with a small magnet. Metal studs give a strong magnet 'pull' at regular points along a vertical line and sound the same hollow tap between them as timber does. Drill one small pilot hole (2-3mm) at a spot you'll cover with a fixing anyway: fine grey swarf means metal, pale dust means timber. Before you drill anything bigger, know that cables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a kitchen wall — a detector helps but can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed board, and a metal frame confuses cheap detectors further. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns before you start, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit first, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.

PR-03Mark and check your fixing pointsHold the rack level again and mark each screw hole through the backplate with a pencil. Check the marks line up horizontally with your spirit level — even a few millimetres out will show once the rack is loaded with plates. If your studs run at typical 400mm or 600mm centres, note which marks land on a stud and which fall in the gap between studs, as this decides your fixing in the next step.

PR-04Choose the right fixing for your wallOn solid brick or block, drill 6-8mm holes to a 40-50mm depth, fit a plastic wall plug, and use a wood screw. On plasterboard over TIMBER studs, drive a wood screw straight into the centre of the stud with no plug needed. On plasterboard over METAL studs, use a self-drilling metal-stud screw or a self-drilling hollow-wall anchor rated for metal studs — never a plain wall plug and never an ordinary wood screw, as it will strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Where a hole falls between metal studs with no stud behind it, use a metal-rated toggle or spring fixing sized for the rack's loaded weight, and if a fixing point is over dot-and-dab plasterboard, choose a fixing long enough to pass through the board, the adhesive dabs, and bite into the masonry behind; lath and plaster needs a similar long fixing through to a solid lath or the wall behind, as the plaster itself won't hold weight.

PR-05Drill and fit the fixingsFor a mark that lands on a metal stud, drill a 3mm pilot hole and drive the self-drilling metal stud screw straight through the plasterboard into the steel — it should feel tight and stop turning cleanly, not spin freely. For a mark between studs, drill the hole size stated on the toggle fixing's packet, push the toggle through until it springs open behind the board, then tighten the screw until the toggle sits flush against the back of the plasterboard. Don't overtighten metal stud screws — the steel is thin and will strip if you keep driving once it's seated.

PR-06Hang and level the rackLift the rack onto the fitted screws or fixings and let it settle onto them fully. Check it's level side to side and adjust before you tighten anything further, as metal stud fixings don't forgive much repositioning once loaded. Give the rack a firm push and pull test by hand before loading any plates.

PR-07Load-test and tidy upMetal stud fixings between studs won't hold a heavy load — if the rack will carry a full stack of plates and heavy dishes regularly, check the fixings on the actual studs are taking most of the weight, not just the toggles between them. Load the rack gradually and check nothing is pulling away from the wall after a few minutes. Fill any stray pilot holes with a dab of decorator's caulk, wipe down the wall, and clear away the dust sheet and offcuts.
