Put up a plate rack on a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Fit a plate rack safely and level, checking your wall type first and using the fixing that actually holds it.

PR-01Plan the position and check your wallDecide where the rack goes - usually above a worktop, at least 150mm clear of any socket or tap, and clear of cupboard doors swinging open. Work out what the wall is made of before you buy fixings. Dot-and-dab plasterboard is common on kitchen block or brick walls refurbished from the 1970s onwards, stud walls (timber or metal) are common on partition walls, and lath and plaster turns up in houses built before about 1930. Tap the wall: dot-and-dab and stud walls sound hollow, solid brick or block sounds solid all over, and lath and plaster has a springy, papery echo.

PR-02Work out timber vs metal stud, if you have a stud wallIf the wall sounds hollow with no dab pattern, you likely have a stud wall behind the plasterboard. Run a magnet or stud detector across the surface - it will stick or beep over the screw heads fixing the board to the frame, and metal studs give a stronger, more even reading along the whole face. Drill a small 3mm pilot hole in an inconspicuous spot: fine pale dust means timber, and tiny bright metal swarf curls mean a steel stud frame. Metal studs are common in flats, new-build kitchens, and anything re-plastered since the 1990s.

PR-03Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere behind a kitchen wall, not just in the usual safe zones, so use a cable and pipe detector first - but still assume something could be there even if it reads clear, especially near sockets, taps, or a boiler. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns before you start, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into any wall that could carry a pipe.

PR-04Mark and level the fixing pointsHold the plate rack against the wall at the height you want, and mark the top of each fixing hole through the fixing lugs with a pencil. Use a spirit level to draw a level line through both marks before drilling - a plate rack looks obviously wrong if it's even 5mm out over its width. Double check the marks line up with your intended fixing points from the tapping and detector checks earlier.

PR-05Drill and fit the right fixing for your wallFor dot-and-dab plasterboard, drill through the board and the air gap behind (usually 25-50mm) into the solid masonry, and use a long fixing, typically a 60-75mm frame fixing or a long screw with a dot-and-dab-rated plug, so at least 30mm bites into the brick or block. For a timber stud, drill a 3mm pilot hole into the centre of the stud and drive in a 50-60mm wood screw directly - no plug needed. For a metal stud, never use a wood screw or plastic plug; use a self-drilling metal-stud screw or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the load, and remember a metal stud alone will not safely hold a loaded plate rack long-term - fix into a timber noggin fitted between the studs, or through to the masonry behind, if you can reach it. For solid brick or block with no dot-and-dab layer, drill with a 6-7mm masonry bit to 40mm depth, insert a matching wall plug, and drive in a 50mm screw. For lath and plaster, find the timber laths (spaced roughly every 25-30mm behind the plaster) with a pilot hole and fix into a lath edge or the joist behind it - plaster alone will crack and pull away under load.

PR-06Fit the rack and check it's secureLift the plate rack onto the fixings and drive each screw home, checking the rack sits flush against the wall with no rocking. Recheck with the spirit level, and adjust the fixings if it has crept while tightening. Give the rack a firm downward and outward tug to test the fixing before you trust it with plates.
PR-07Load up and tidy upLoad plates gradually rather than all at once, keeping heavier items lower down on the rack. Vacuum up any drilling dust or plaster debris, and wipe down the wall and worktop below. Keep any leftover fixings and note down which type you used, in case you need to match them later.
