Put up a plate rack on a lath and plaster wall

Mark, check for cables, then hang a plate rack level and secure to a kitchen wall in one session.

PR-01Clear the area and gather your toolsClear the worktop or floor below where the rack is going and lay down a dust sheet to catch plaster dust and debris. Get your tools and fixings together before you start. Check the rack's fixing holes and note the spacing so you know what you're planning around.

PR-02Mark your position and a level lineHold the rack against the wall at the height you want and mark the top corners lightly in pencil. Use a spirit level to draw a level horizontal line through these marks. Measure and mark each fixing hole position on this line, checking your spacing against worktops or tile lines so it looks straight and centred.

PR-03Work out exactly what your wall is made ofSolid brick or block feels solid everywhere you tap, and drilling produces gritty red or grey dust. Lath and plaster feels slightly springy and gives a dull hollow knock most of the way along, but feels solid roughly every 400-600mm where a timber stud sits behind it. Plasterboard on studs sounds hollow between fixings and solid on the stud line; a magnet or detector often picks up the screw heads holding the board on. Dot-and-dab plasterboard sounds hollow with occasional solid patches (the dabs of adhesive) at irregular spacing, and the wall may feel slightly springy compared to solid masonry.
PR-04Check for cables and pipes before you drillRun a cable and pipe detector over your marked line, but still assume something could be there even if it shows clear — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or outside the normal safe zones. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.
PR-05Find the studs behind the wall and mark true fixing pointsOn lath and plaster, tap along your line and use a stud detector to find the timber studs, usually every 400-600mm, and confirm with a small 2-3mm pilot hole checked for timber dust. Plaster and lath alone will not hold a loaded plate rack, so every fixing needs to land in a stud. If the rack's fixing holes don't line up with a stud, screw a timber batten across at least two studs and fix the rack to that instead. On plasterboard, dot-and-dab or metal-stud walls, use the same detector approach to locate the stud or the masonry behind before you commit to a drilling position.

PR-06Drill and fix, matched to your wall typeSolid brick or block: drill a 7mm hole to 45mm deep, fit a red wall plug, drive a 4x50mm screw into its centre. Plasterboard on timber studs: drill a 3mm pilot hole into the stud centre and drive a 4x60mm wood screw straight into the timber. Plasterboard on metal studs: never use a plastic plug or wood screw, it strips straight through 0.5mm steel — use a self-drilling metal-stud fixing driven straight into the stud instead. Dot-and-dab: the plasterboard skin alone won't hold a loaded rack, so use a fixing long enough (typically 75-100mm) to pass through the board and dab and grip the masonry behind. Lath and plaster: drill a 3mm pilot hole through the plaster and lath into the stud you marked earlier, then drive a 4x75mm screw into the timber, and fill any hairline crack in the plaster around the hole once done.

PR-07Fit the rack and check it's levelLift the rack onto the fixings and drive the first screws home fully, but not so tight that you crack the surrounding plaster. Fit the remaining fixings through all the marked holes. Recheck with a spirit level and adjust before you fully tighten the last fixing.

PR-08Load test before you trust itPull down firmly on the rack to check it holds without movement. Load it gradually, spreading plates evenly across the shelves rather than piling weight at one end. Check the level again and look closely for any hairline cracks appearing around the fixings — that's a sign a fixing hasn't found solid timber or masonry and needs redoing.
PR-09Tidy upRemove the dust sheet and vacuum up plaster dust from the floor and nearby surfaces. Wipe around the fixings with a damp cloth to lift any remaining dust. Put spare fixings and tools away so they're ready for the next job.
