Put up a shelf above a radiator on a timber stud wall

Plan, pick the right fixing for your wall type, then drill, fix and level a shelf above your radiator safely.

SH-01Plan the shelf height and bracket positionsDecide how high above the radiator you want the shelf. Leave at least 100mm clear above the radiator top so heat can escape and the shelf won't warp. Mark this height on the wall, then use a spirit level to draw a level line for the tops of the brackets. Mark bracket positions roughly 50mm in from each end of the shelf, and no more than 600mm apart if the shelf is long.
SH-02Work out what your wall is made ofTap along your level line: a dull, solid knock means solid brick or block; a hollow drum sound means plasterboard on studs, dot-and-dab, or lath and plaster. Run a stud detector or magnet along the wall to find a vertical line of screw heads, which marks a timber or metal stud (usually 400mm or 600mm apart). Drill a small 3mm pilot hole at a fixing point: pale dust means timber, fine grey swarf means metal stud, and a soft crumbly feel with a hard ridge every 300-400mm means lath and plaster. Dot-and-dab often sounds hollow, with roughly 40-50mm of air before you hit solid masonry behind.
SH-03Check for hidden pipes and cables before you drillCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in the usual safe zones, so sweep your fixing line with a cable and pipe detector first. Even then, assume something could be there, especially near where radiator pipework rises from the floor — detectors miss deep cables, metal conduit, and anything behind metal-backed plasterboard, and metal studs can confuse cheap detectors further. Find your stopcock now (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you're at all unsure, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit and turn off the water at the stopcock before you drill.
SH-04Choose the right fixing for your wallSolid brick or block: drill with a 6mm masonry bit to 45-50mm depth, fit a red wall plug, then drive in a 5x50mm screw. Timber stud: drive a 4x40mm wood screw straight into the centre of the stud, no plug needed. Metal stud: use a self-drilling metal-stud anchor or toggle-type hollow-wall fixing rated for the load — never a plain plastic plug or ordinary wood screw, which strips straight through 0.5mm steel. Plasterboard between studs or dot-and-dab: use a nylon or metal toggle fixing, sizing up to a long 75-90mm frame fixing for dot-and-dab so it bites into the masonry behind. Lath and plaster: aim for a stud where you can, or use a heavy-duty toggle fixing rated for plasterboard-type walls, since plain plugs won't grip laths. A metal stud alone won't hold a heavily loaded shelf long-term — if you can't hit a stud or the masonry behind, get a timber noggin fitted between the studs first.

SH-05Mark and drill the fixing holesHold each bracket against the wall on your level line and mark the screw holes through it with a pencil. Drill each hole with the bit size for your fixing — 3mm for a timber stud pilot hole, 6mm for masonry, or whatever size is printed on your toggle or metal-stud fixing packet. Keep the drill square to the wall, and don't drill deeper than you need to, especially near the radiator pipe run.

SH-06Fit the bracketsPush in wall plugs or toggles as needed, then drive in your screws or fixings until each bracket sits firm and tight against the wall. Don't overtighten toggle fixings, as they can crush the plasterboard behind them. Check each bracket doesn't wobble before moving on to the next.
SH-07Fit the shelf and check it's levelRest the shelf on the brackets and check it's level end to end and front to back with a spirit level. Adjust the shelf if needed, then screw it down to the brackets from underneath so the screws don't show on top.

SH-08Tidy up and do a final checkVacuum up drill dust and wipe down the wall and radiator. Give the shelf a firm push to check it holds without moving, then step back and check it's level by eye. Bin any offcuts and packaging.
