Put up a shelf above a radiator on a dot-and-dab plasterboard wall

Fit a sturdy shelf above your radiator, checking what's really behind the wall before you drill for a secure fixing.

SH-01Gather your tools and materialsGet everything ready before you start so you are not stopping halfway through. You will need a tape measure, pencil, spirit level, cordless drill with wood and masonry bits, a cable/pipe/stud detector, and a dust sheet to protect the floor and radiator below.

SH-02Mark the shelf height and bracket positionsLeave at least 150mm clearance above the top of the radiator so heat does not damage the shelf or scorch the wall behind it. Hold the shelf where you want it, mark the top edge with a pencil, then use a spirit level to draw a level line the full width of the shelf. Mark bracket positions on this line no more than 600mm apart, and closer together for anything you plan to load heavily.

SH-03Run your detector and know your isolation points before drillingCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, not just in neat vertical or horizontal zones. Run your detector over every mark, but treat it as a warning system, not proof of safety — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed plasterboard, or simply out of range, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, and if you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit first.
SH-04Work out what is behind the plasterboardTap along your marked line. A dull, slightly springy sound with something solid a little further in usually means dot-and-dab plasterboard fixed to masonry behind. A hollow sound between firmer points every 400-600mm usually means a stud wall — run your detector or a magnet along the line to find the screw heads holding the board to the studs. Drill a small 2mm pilot hole at a stud position: fine pale dust means timber, and shiny metal swarf means a metal stud. An older wall that feels slightly springy and bouncy, rather than hollow, may be lath and plaster.
SH-05Choose the right fixing for your wall typeOn dot-and-dab, use a frame fixing at least 75mm long so it passes through the 12.5mm board, the dab gap, and at least 30mm into the solid masonry behind. On solid brick or block with no dot-and-dab, use a standard wall plug and 50mm screw in a 6mm hole drilled 40mm deep. Into a timber stud, use a 45mm wood screw straight into the centre of the stud. Into a metal stud, use a proper self-drilling metal-stud screw or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the load — never a plastic wall plug or an ordinary wood screw, both of which strip straight through 0.5mm steel.

SH-06Note the limits of a metal stud and lath and plasterA metal stud will not hold serious weight or anything that pulls away from the wall in use — a heavily loaded shelf above a radiator, especially if you plan to lean or rest things on it, may need a timber noggin fitted between the studs first, or fixing through to the masonry behind. On lath and plaster, screw into the timber laths where you can find them, using a pilot hole to avoid cracking the old plaster, and keep the load light if you cannot locate solid timber at every fixing point.
SH-07Drill your fixing holesDrill each marked point using the bit size that matches your chosen fixing and wall type, keeping the drill level and square to the wall. Go slowly through plasterboard so the bit does not wander before it reaches the masonry or stud behind. Vacuum out dust from each hole before fitting the plug or anchor.
SH-08Fit the wall plugs or anchors and bracketsPush or tap the plug or anchor fully into each hole so it sits flush with the wall. Hold each bracket against its marked position and drive the fixing home with a screwdriver or drill on a low, controlled setting — do not overtighten, especially on plasterboard, as this can crush the board around the fixing.

SH-09Check the brackets are level and secureRest the spirit level across the top of all the brackets and check the bubble sits central. If one bracket sits low, do not force it — remove it, re-check the fixing, and refit rather than trying to shim it level, which weakens the hold.
SH-10Fit the shelf to the bracketsLift the shelf onto the brackets and check it sits flush and level along its length. Mark and drill small pilot holes up through the underside of the shelf into each bracket, then fix from below with short screws so nothing shows on top.

SH-11Final check and tidy upGive the shelf a firm push and pull test before loading it with anything. Check the 150mm heat clearance above the radiator is still in place, vacuum up all dust and offcuts, and wipe the shelf down before you use it.
