Replace a socket faceplate like-for-like

Swap a worn socket faceplate safely: isolate the circuit, reconnect the wires correctly, then test before switching back on.

RSF-01Gather tools and turn off the powerSwitch off the circuit that feeds the socket at the consumer unit - the ring or radial circuit, not the room light. If you're not sure which MCB it is, plug in a lamp and flick MCBs off one at a time until it goes dark. Lock off the MCB or tape over it so nobody switches it back on while you're working. Get your voltage tester, a flat and a cross-head screwdriver, and the new faceplate ready before you start.

RSF-02Prove the socket is deadLoosen the faceplate screws enough to pull it slightly away from the wall, then touch your voltage tester probes across the terminals before you touch any bare wire. Check line to neutral, line to earth, and neutral to earth. Never trust the socket's own switch - it only breaks the load side, the terminals themselves can still be live. If the tester shows anything, stop and go back to the consumer unit.

RSF-03Remove the old faceplateUndo the two fixing screws, top and bottom, and pull the faceplate away from the wall box. Let it hang on its wires rather than pulling them tight. You don't need to worry about what's behind the box - solid brick, timber stud, metal stud, dot-and-dab or lath and plaster - because you're reusing the existing mounting box and its two screws, not drilling or fixing into the wall itself.
RSF-04Photograph the wiring before you touch itTake a clear photo on your phone showing exactly which wire sits in which terminal. Most UK sockets have brown (line), blue (neutral) and bare or green/yellow sleeved (earth) wires. On a double socket wired 'looped in', some terminals may hold two wires - photograph it exactly as it is so you can copy it later.
RSF-05Disconnect the old wiresLoosen each terminal screw and pull the wires free one at a time, keeping them separate. Check the earth wire has a green/yellow sleeve right up to the terminal - if it's slipped or missing, fit a fresh length before reconnecting. Set the old faceplate aside for recycling.

RSF-06Check if the new faceplate needs an earth tailPlastic faceplates earth through the circuit wires alone. Metal-clad faceplates - steel or brass finish - usually have their own earth terminal on the metal body, and this needs a short earth tail linking it back to the box earth terminal, or the metal front isn't properly earthed even though the circuit wires are connected. Check the fitting instructions that came with your new plate.
RSF-07Connect the wires to the new faceplateMatch each wire to the same terminal position shown in your photo - line to L, neutral to N, earth to E. Strip back only enough copper to sit fully inside the terminal, with none showing outside it. Tighten each screw firmly, then give every wire a gentle tug to check it's held.

Replacing a socket faceplate like-for-like is not notifiable work under Part P (Building Regulations, England). It still has to be wired correctly and left safe - if you're not confident with this, get a competent person to check it.

RSF-08Fix the faceplate back onto the boxPush the faceplate back gently, tucking the wires in so none are trapped or squashed behind it. Fit the two fixing screws and tighten until snug. Don't overtighten - this can crack a plastic faceplate or strip the thread in the box. Check the plate sits flush and level.
RSF-09Restore power and testSwitch the MCB back on at the consumer unit. Plug in a socket tester or a lamp and check every outlet works, including both sides of a double plate. If a plug-in tester flags a wiring fault, switch off at the consumer unit straight away and recheck your connections against your photo.

RSF-10Tidy upTake the old faceplate to a recycling point - most electrical retailers and household recycling centres accept small electrical items. Wipe down the wall around the new plate and put your tools away. Keep the wiring photo somewhere safe in case you need it again.
