Board a small area of loft for storage

Raise boards clear of the insulation and screw them to the joists to make safe, solid loft storage.

LB-01Plan the area and gather your toolsDecide which part of the loft you'll board — stick to areas with good headroom near the hatch, not right into the eaves. Check the joist depth and spacing first: 400mm or 600mm centres are both common, and this affects how many raisers and screws you need. Lay a board across the loft as a temporary platform to stand on while you work, never step directly on ceiling plasterboard.

LB-02Check for cables and pipes before you screw anything downLoft joists are solid, visible timber, not hidden studs behind plasterboard, so the usual wall-fixing rules for timber and metal studs don't apply here. But cables for lighting, smoke alarms and loft-mounted equipment often run along or across the tops of joists, and pipes can run near tanks. Sweep the area with a cable and pipe detector, then still assume something might be there — lift insulation carefully by hand rather than kicking through it, and look before you screw. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you ever nick a pipe. If you're at all unsure what's under the boards, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before you drill or screw near it.

LB-03Clear the space and check the joists will take the loadMove any stored items out of the way and vacuum or brush off loose debris so you can see the joists clearly. Only board over joists that are the right depth for storage loads, not the thinner joists sometimes used where a loft was never meant to be walked on. Leave a 50mm gap at the eaves so you don't block the roof ventilation.
LB-04Fit raisers or battens to lift the boards clear of the insulationLoft insulation needs to stay at full thickness to do its job, so don't board straight over the top and squash it flat. Screw loft leg raisers, or 47x50mm timber battens laid flat along the joists, at 400-600mm centres to lift the boarding above the insulation line. Fix each raiser or batten into the joist below with a single screw long enough to bite at least 30mm into solid timber.

LB-05Cut the loft boards to fitMeasure the area and mark boards to length, allowing for any obstructions like water tanks, pipework or the hatch opening. Support each board on trestles or across two joists before cutting, and cut with the good face up if using a jigsaw. Dry-fit each piece before fixing to check it sits flat on the raisers with no rocking.

LB-06Screw the boards down to the raisers or battensScrew through each board into the raiser or batten below, not just into thin air between joists. Use two or three screws per joist crossing, spaced evenly, and drive them flush so nothing catches or trips. Stagger the joins between boards like brickwork so the floor doesn't flex along one line.

LB-07Trim around the hatch and any obstructionsCut boards to fit neatly around the loft hatch frame, pipes and cables, leaving a clean edge rather than forcing a board over anything. Keep a clear gap around any downlights or extractor fan housings, since these can get hot and boarding right over them is a fire risk. Do not board over or bury any part of the roof's ventilation path at the eaves.

Building Regulations require loft insulation to stay effective and ventilation paths to stay clear — don't compress insulation under boards or block eaves vents.

LB-08Tidy up and do a final checkSweep up sawdust and offcuts, and bag any loose insulation you disturbed rather than leaving it compressed in one corner. Walk the new boarded area gently to check for any give or squeak, and tighten any screw that hasn't seated properly. Take your tools and torch back down and make sure the loft hatch closes properly when you're done.
