Fit an overhead garage storage rack to a plasterboard ceiling

Fit an overhead garage storage rack to solid joists, checking cables and using the fixing that suits your ceiling type.

AB-01Check the rack's weight limit and plan the layoutLook up the rack's maximum load and its fixing centres, both are in the kit's instructions. Measure your garage ceiling and mark on paper where the rack will sit, keeping clear of car doors, the garage door track and any lights. Most racks need two rows of fixings roughly 600mm apart, so check this against your ceiling joist spacing before you buy brackets. Set the height so loaded boxes clear car roofs and the door as it opens.

AB-02Clear the garage and set up safelyMove the car out and clear the floor under the work area completely. Set your steps or ladder on firm, level ground, and have someone hand up tools and hold long fixings steady while you're overhead. Wear eye protection, dust and grit from overhead drilling falls straight down onto your face.

AB-03Work out what your ceiling is made of and find the joistsRun a stud/joist detector across the ceiling, then check with a strong magnet - it sticks to the screw heads holding the board to the frame, and dragging it along lets you trace a line. Tap along the ceiling: a dull thud usually means a joist, a hollow sound means you're between them. Drill a 3mm pilot hole at a suspected fixing point and look at what comes out: pale dust means a timber joist, fine grey swarf means a lightweight steel joist, and hard gritty dust with real resistance means a solid concrete soffit. In an older converted garage you may find lath and plaster instead of plasterboard, so still hunt for the real joist rather than trusting the surface.

AB-04Check for cables and pipes before you drillCables and pipes can run through a ceiling void almost anywhere, and a detector can miss them if they're deep, in metal conduit, behind foil-backed board, or if a metal joist frame is confusing a cheap detector. Treat the ceiling as live until proven otherwise, even after scanning it. Find your stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all about what's overhead, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry it.

AB-05Mark, drill and fix according to your ceiling typeTimber joist: drill a 3mm pilot hole in the centre of the joist and drive a 6mm x 100mm coach screw or the bolt supplied, never rely on the plasterboard alone. Metal joist, common in flats and newer steel-frame garages: a plastic plug or ordinary wood screw strips straight through 0.5-1.2mm steel, so use a self-drilling metal-stud screw for light brackets only, and never hang the full loaded rack from metal joists alone - fit a timber noggin cut to span between two joists, screw it to both, then fix the rack to the noggin. Lath and plaster ceiling: find the real joist as above, then drill through the plaster and lath into solid timber and use a coach screw that bites at least 40mm into the joist, with a helper supporting the ceiling from below as old plaster keys can crack and drop. Solid concrete or masonry soffit, common where the garage sits under another room: drill with an SDS drill and masonry bit to the plug maker's stated depth, usually 50-60mm, then fit a heavy-duty masonry plug and screw sized for your load, undersized fixings here pull straight out. Dot-and-dab doesn't apply to a ceiling, it's a wall-lining method, so ignore it even if your garage walls are finished that way.

AB-06Fit the mounting rails and rackHold the first rail against your marked line and check it's level before driving any fixings home. Fit one fixing loosely at each end, recheck it's level and lined up with your joists or noggin, then fit the rest and tighten fully. Repeat for the second rail, then clip or bolt on the rack legs and shelf panels following the kit's instructions.

AB-07Load test, then tidy upPush down hard on the empty rack and check nothing moves, flexes or creaks before loading anything onto it. Add items gradually, heaviest first, and never exceed the rack's stated weight limit. Sweep up dust and offcuts from the floor, wipe down surfaces, and put your tools away.
