Fit a bike hoist to a concrete ceiling

Fit a ceiling-mounted bike hoist safely, matching the fixing to a concrete slab, timber joists or metal joists.

BH-01Check the space and plan the hoist positionPick a spot clear of doorways and light fittings, with enough headroom for the bike to lift clear of head height. Check the hoist's weight rating against your bike — most kits take around 20-25kg, so a heavy ebike may need a stronger hoist or two units side by side.

BH-02Work out what your ceiling is made ofTap along the ceiling: a dull, solid knock with no give is concrete; a hollow drum sound that turns firmer every 400-600mm is plasterboard on joists. Drill a small 3mm test hole in an inconspicuous spot — fine grey dust and a hard stop within a few mm means concrete, pale dust means a timber joist, and the drill dropping through with no resistance means you're between joists and need to shift the hole.

BH-03Detect cables and pipes, then isolate if you're unsureSweep the whole fixing area with a cable and pipe detector before drilling — but still treat the ceiling as live, since detectors miss deep cable, cable in conduit, and anything behind metal-backed board. Find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns, so you can cut the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all about what's above the ceiling, switch off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before you drill.

BH-04Drill and fix into a solid concrete ceilingMark the fixing points against the hoist bracket, then drill with an SDS drill and an 8mm masonry bit to the depth given on your anchor packaging, usually 50-60mm. Vacuum the dust out of each hole, then fit a metal sleeve anchor or resin anchor rated for overhead pulling loads — never a plastic wall plug on a fixing that gets pulled and jolted repeatedly.

BH-05Fixing into a plasterboard ceiling on timber joistsIf your test showed timber, find the centre of the joist by re-checking with small pilot holes either side of your mark, then fix the hoist bracket with a coach screw or heavy-duty wood screw at least 50mm long into the centre of the joist — never into plasterboard alone. If the bracket holes don't line up with a joist, screw a timber batten across at least two joists first and fix the hoist to that instead.

BH-06Fixing into a plasterboard ceiling on metal joistsMetal joists — common in steel-frame flats and some loft conversions — will not hold a bike hoist on their own. The repeated pulling and jolting will work a self-drilling fixing loose or tear straight through 0.5mm steel. Screw a timber batten across at least two metal joists using self-drilling metal-stud screws, then fix the hoist bracket to the batten with wood screws. If you're not confident doing this, fix through to the structure above the ceiling instead.

BH-07Fit the ceiling brackets and pulleyOffer up the bracket, check it's level and square to the direction the bike will travel, then tighten every fixing fully. Thread the rope through the pulley wheels as shown in the hoist instructions, making sure it runs freely with no twists.

BH-08Attach the hoist hooks and rope lockClip the hooks or straps onto the bike frame at the points the hoist manufacturer recommends, usually the top tube and a wheel. Feed the rope through the cleat or lock and check it grips firmly when you let go.
BH-09Load test before you trust itLift the bike a short way off the floor first and check the ceiling fixing, bracket and rope all hold without creaking or moving. Lower it, then lift it fully, lock the rope off, and check there's clear headroom underneath.
BH-10Tidy upVacuum all drilling dust from the floor and any surfaces below, and wipe the area down. Keep spare fixings and offcuts of batten for next time, and give the rope lock one more check before you leave the bike hanging.
