Fit a bike hoist to a lath and plaster ceiling

Fit a pulley bike hoist into solid ceiling joists safely, whatever's behind the plaster — lath and plaster, plasterboard, or concrete.

BH-01Clear the space and identify your ceiling typeMove anything from under the fitting area and lay a dust sheet on the floor, because old lime plaster crumbles as you drill. Look and gently knock the ceiling: lath and plaster feels slightly springy and sounds hollow with a light echo, while plasterboard feels flatter and firmer underneath. Run a magnet along the ceiling line — if it sticks, you've got metal furring channels behind the board, common in some flat conversions. A ceiling with no give at all and a dull, dense knock is usually a solid concrete soffit.

BH-02Find the joists and mark the hook positionsRun your detector across the ceiling to find joist centres, usually 400mm or 600mm apart in older houses. Check your hoist kit's hook spacing against the joist spacing — most kits need small adjustments so all four hooks land on solid timber, not just plaster or board. Mark each hook position with a pencil cross, then confirm with a small 3mm test hole: timber dust means you've hit a joist, fine white dust or nothing solid means you're between them and need to shift the mark.

BH-03Check for cables and pipes, then isolate if unsureCeiling voids can hide cables and pipes almost anywhere, not just near light fittings — a detector helps but doesn't guarantee you're clear, especially through thick old plaster or a metal furring channel. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut off the water fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and never drill directly above or beside a light fitting.
BH-04Drill pilot holes to suit your ceiling typeLath and plaster: drill a 3mm pilot hole through the plaster and lath (roughly 20-25mm) then straight into the joist, using a slow speed so the plaster face doesn't crack. Plasterboard on timber joists: drill straight through the board into the joist with the same 3mm bit. Plasterboard on metal furring channels: skip drilling into the channel — a bike hoist needs more pulling strength than a channel gives, so screw a 44x22mm timber batten across at least two channels using self-drilling metal-stud screws, then fix the hoist into the batten instead. Solid concrete soffit: switch to a 6mm masonry bit, drill to the depth marked on your concrete anchor, and blow or vacuum the dust out before fitting the anchor.

BH-05Fix the four ceiling hooksLath and plaster or plasterboard on timber joists: drive the coach screw or eye bolt supplied with the kit into the centre of the joist until it seats firmly, but don't overtighten or you'll crack the old plaster around the hole. On lath and plaster there's often a gap between the plaster face and the joist, so use a longer screw if needed to get enough thread into solid timber, not just the fixing collar. Timber batten (metal channel ceilings): screw the hooks into the batten the same way. Solid concrete soffit: fit the concrete anchor into the drilled hole and tighten until snug, checking it doesn't spin freely in the hole.

BH-06Assemble the pulley system and thread the ropeClip or screw the pulley wheels onto each ceiling hook as shown in your kit's instructions. Thread the rope through all four pulleys in the order given, leaving enough slack to lower the bike cradle or hooks down to a comfortable loading height. Tie off any loose ends with a secure double knot so nothing slips while you're working.

BH-07Test the hoist empty before loading the bikePull the rope to raise and lower the empty hoist several times, watching each hook closely for any movement. Listen and look for cracking or crumbling plaster around the fixings as it takes the small load of the mechanism itself. If any hook shifts or plaster starts to crack, stop and refit that hook into solid timber before going any further — don't move on to hanging the bike until all four hooks feel completely solid.
BH-08Hang the bike and set the cleat heightLift the bike into the cradle or hooks and pull the rope to raise it to your chosen ceiling height, leaving enough headroom underneath to walk past safely. Wrap the rope around the wall cleat at a comfortable working height — around 1.5m up is typical — and tie off securely. Coil and tidy any excess rope so it's not a trip or snag hazard.

BH-09Patch the ceiling and clear upFill any small cracks or chips around the fixing points with a fine surface filler, feathering it flush with the surrounding plaster once dry. Sand lightly and touch in with matching ceiling paint if the patch shows. Vacuum up all dust and debris, fold away your dust sheet, and give the loaded hoist a final visual check before you trust it fully.
